Stories Serbian Retreat 1915: Florence served as an orderly with Mrs Stobart's 3rd Farmers Unit of the Serbian Relief Fund between the 1st April 1915 and the 29th December 1915 (Red Cross record). Along with the rest of her colleagues she was caught up in the Serbian Retreat at the end of 1915. Florence described her experiences of the Retreat in newspaper articles, recounting to the Daily Record and Mail for the 24th December 1915 how the members of the Unit had to walk across the mountains in the bitter winter weather along with the retreating Serbian army and refugees. In the Birmingham Daily Post for the 24th December 1915 p.10 she is quoted. "Our boots were worn out and we not possibly get a fresh supply. Many of our women have been walking in men's Army boots, and others have been walking practically in their stockinged feet.". Florence's War Service after 1915: Florence only stayed in Britain for a few months after her return following the ordeal of the Serbian Retreat. According to her Red Cross record she w

Description: Good evening,
My name is Dana and my mother's father auntie was Anita Maw who been marriend with Bertie Maw from your story. Her maden name Cojocea .Was a big suprise for me to find family-maw site and to find granpa's auntie here.We always knew from the family stories Bertie was an englishman in love with a beautiful romanian, married her, took her to England and arround the world and when he felt he will die took her back in Romania(in 1931 ).Sadly they never had babies . He meet her while he was trading grains in Romania arround 1900.Bertie had a friend, a doctor in Moinesti near Bacau and its were they meet.Anita is born in 1884 in Bacau county in a village near Moinesti not in 1886 as is specified in the 1911 census and she worked as a cleanner in Bertie's friend house. They come back to Romania in 1931 spring and he died here , in Bacau, in the autumn, a year after his mum death. After the war Anita been in a lot of troubles with the comunist regime because she had 2 houses and some! land in Bacau left from her husband. They nationalized all and she been forced to live in the house where Bertie died (she had to announce the police if she wanted to leave the town). The russians came at the end of the WWII and stole all her jewellery and some furniture. Bertie is burried in Bacau and he had a headstone that Anita had to sold it to someone else because she had no money to live. Even I can remember Anita from when I was a child because she died in 1974 in the village where she was born .I was only 7 when she died. Never meet me granpa but meet Anita, his auntie !
There were times here you could'nt even speak about some of your familly who been living in a capitalist England :O)but thats another story. Facts are that she had to suffer because she came back in Romania. But Bertie thought its much better for Anita to live back with her familly.
Mum knows Bertie had a sister who died in the first WW somewhere in Yougoslavia beeing a nurse. Must be the unmmaried sister of Bertie and Alick.
Thats the familly story I know and thank you for helping us to find out some more about it.If you are interested I got some pictures with Bertie and Anita.
Kind regards
Dana
