Notes - Comments (Tree: The Maw Family): Hi
Just found your site and think we have a connection.
I am descended from Christian Rudolf Otto (who worked with Carl Schultz in Paulinzella at the Schulze brothers' organbuilders). My understanding is that Brindley and Foster (Sheffield based organ builders) 'headhunted' the two young men to work for them in England.
I believe that they arrived in Hull and know that they worked on the recently restored Doncaster Cathedral organ, as well as some in East London. My great grandfather was a voicer which meant that he cut the pipes.
Carl and Rudolf were later joined by Carl's sister Johanna Emmeline Schultz who kept house for the two men. Rudolf and Emmeline married in Hull in 1866. They moved to Sheffield and had Sophia, William/Wilhelm, Ernest Rudolf and Lily (infant death). Ernest was my grandfather. The two boys also worked as organ builders before setting up a furniture shop in Sheffield.
I believe that Emmeline travelled to Germany fairly often to visit her siblings. I also believe that her mother's maiden name was Heerwagen and that the family came from the Thüringen region.
Maybe some of this sounds familiar. If so, it would be good to share stories.
