Thomas B. Maw, who owns and cultivates a farm of one hundred and sixty acres of productive land in Winfield township and is also part owner of a tract of twenty acres of timber land on the Wapsie, was born in Allens Grove township, Scott county, November 20, 1845, a son of Johnson and Julia (Thompson) Maw. The father a native of England, was born in 1814, acquired his education in the schools of that country and afterward learned the tailor's trade. In the years 1834 he sailed for the United States and settled in New York, where he spent two years. About 1841 he came to the middle west and established his home in Allens Grove township, Scott county, Iowa. This was several years before the state was admitted to the Union and even the counties bordering the Mississippi were but sparsely settled, the work of improvement and cultivation being scarcely begun. Wild game was quite plentiful and the prairies were covered with their native grasses. Mr. Maw entered raw land from the government, for which he paid the usual price of a dollar and a quarter per acre. He began with about eighty acres and as the years passed he added to his original holdings from time to time until he was the owner of more than three hundred acres at his demise. He was diligent and persevering in business and the careful manner in which he cultivated his farm made it a valuable and productive property. He also took an active part in community affairs and held most of the township offices, also serving as school director and trustee. He was elected on the democratic ticket and always remained a stanch advocate of the democracy. He was also one of the organizers of the Grange and did everything in his power to advance agricultural interests in this part of the state.

Johnson Maw died in 1899, while his wife passed away at the age of sixty-five years. She was born in Virginia and came with her parents to Scott county, Iowa, about 1840, the journey being made with ox-teams across the country from the Old Dominion. The Thompson family also established their home in Allens Grove township and in this locality Mr. Maw continued to reside until called to her final rest. By her marriage she became the mother of ten children, namely: Elizabeth, the wife of John Riley of Allens Grove township; Thomas B., of this re; John E., who makes his home in Nebraska; George, a resident of Davenport; Hannah, the wife of R. K. Brownlee, of long Grove, this county; Frederick, a resident of Idaho; Linnie, who became the wife of a Mr. Fuller and is now deceased; Nellie, of long Grove; Stephen, who lives in Nebraska; and Morgan, of Davenport.

Thomas B. Maw has spent his entire life in this county and his memory goes back to the time when the homes were widely scattered, when the land was largely uncultivated and when there were few of the advantages known to the older east. In his childhood he attended the district schools of Allens Grove township and there learned the carpenter's trade, for about ten years assisting in the erection of many houses and buildings in Scott county and especially in Allens Grove township. At length he abandoned that trade to resume the occupation of farming and for a few years rented land from his father, during which period he carefully saved his earning until his capital was sufficient to enable him to purchase eighty acres of land in Winfield township. It was an improved tract, upon which he mad his home for twelve years, when he sold out and bought his present farm, which he purchased from John Little, who had bought it from the government. Upon this place Mr. Maw has remained continuously since and has made nearly all of the improvements which constitute this one of the attractive farms of the district. The fields are carefully tilled and return him good crops, while upon this place he keeps good grades of stock.

On the 16th of March, 1882, Mr. Maw was married to Miss Jane Whistler, a daughter of Thomas and Betsey Whistler, of Allens Grove township. Mrs. Maw was born in Buffalo, Scott county, and is fifty-five years of age. By her marriage she became the mother of two children: Ruby, who married George Clapp and has one child, Zella; and Ollie E., who was killed by a horse in 1908, when eighteen years of age. Mr. and Mrs. Clapp reside with her parents.

Mr. Maw has served as school director of Winfield township and has ever been interested in the cause of education, realizing how valuable is intellectual training as a preparation for life's practical and responsible duties. For sixty-five years he has witnessed the growth and development of the county as it has thrown off the evidences of pioneer life and taken on all the conditions which indicate modern progress. He has seen the wild land transformed into rich fields, the pioneer homes replaced by commodious and substantial residences, while villages have been converted into enterprising towns and cities. At all times he has been interested in the welfare of the community and rejoices in what has been accomplished. He is now practically living retired, leaving the active work of the farm to his son-in-law but retaining the ownership of the property he derives therefrom a substantial annual income.

"When the automobile of J.W. Maw of Salem was run down by an Oregon Electric train on the Fifth street crossing yesterday, Maynard Maw, 12 years old, received injuries from which he died." CJ Oct 10, 1925 5:6
"Salem Boy Is Killed In Crash With Train--Maynard Maw, 12, Is Fatally Injured Sunday--Light Car Driven by Brother Is Wrecked by OE Near Highland Station--Maynard Maw, 12, who lived with his parents at 2135 North Fourth, was injured fatally Sunday noon when the Ford `bug' in which he was riding, collided with a Portland bound Oregon Electric train at the North Fifth street crossing near the Highland school. His brother, Russell, 17, was driving the car, and was injured about the right arm and hip. As he was driving the car the steering wheel saved him from being thrown through the windshield and onto the curb.
Maynard was jolted through the windshield and struck the curb with his head, in front of the Fred F. Peters' home, into which he was taken rapidly losing consciousness. As soon as possible he was rushed to the Salem hospital, but died at 4 o'clock. The auto was tossed nearly 50 feet into a clump of rose bushes along the curb.
It is said that there were several waiting at the Highland depot to take the train, and they had signalled for the train to stop. But it was not slowed up as quickly as usual, and it is thought that Russell misgauged the speed of the train.
Mrs. J.W. Maw, mother of the boys, who was in Idaho Falls, Idaho, attending the funeral of her step mother, at the time of the accident, was notified and is returning home for the funeral of her boy, which will not be arranged until she arrives. Mr. Maw works at the Cherry City bakery. Maynard is survived by two younger brothers, Howard, 11, and Merrill, 2; a sister, aged 7; Russell, and his parents." Vivian L. Parker, 86, of Nampa, passed away Sunday, Oct. 26, 2008 at a local care center.

Visitation will be 7-8 p.m. today, Oct. 28, at Alsip & Persons Funeral Chapel, 404 10th Ave. S., Nampa and graveside services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, at the Meridian Cemetery, 895 E. Franklin Road in Meridian.

Vivian was born Sept. 10, 1922, in Meridian, Idaho, to George and Clara (McIntosh) Maw. She met and married David Edward Parker on Dec. 3, 1943, in Everett, Wash., and they made their home in the Boise Valley. They raised four children - Debbie, Carol, Jim and Bob. Vivian worked for Birdseye, Simplot, Northrup King and Rodgers for 13 years, retiring in 1982.

She joined Good Sams in 1979, and held the office of president and treasurer. Vivian belonged to the Royal Neighbors of America for over 60 years and held every office at one time or another. She loved to can and turned out some beautiful jars of fruit, all types of crafts and grew beautiful roses. Vivian was a very loving and caring mother and grandmother.

Vivian is survived by her children Debbie and Steve Duncan of Bowmont, Carol and Robert Gray of Caldwell, Jim and Susan Parker of Mississippi and Bob and Marsha Parker of Downey, Idaho. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Edward C. Maw passed away at the age of 87. He was born to Roderick and Minnie Maw on the family farm four miles northwest of Meridian, ID. He grew up on a farm across the road from where he was born and on Smiths Prairie, where his father owned a cattle ranch and grazing permit on the Boise National Forest. At an early age Ed learned to ride, pack and shoe a horse, fish with a willow pole and shoot blue grouse with a 22 rifle. His education started at the Blue Valley two-room elementary schoolhouse three miles north of Meridian. He graduated from Meridian High School, attended the Southern Branch of the University of Idaho at Pocatello know now as Idaho State University, and graduated from Utah State University with a bachelor of science degree in forestry.Upon graduation from the university, Ed went to work for the Boise National Forest, receiving his permanent appointment on the Weiser National Forest, which is now integrated into the Payette National Forest.

On Sept 2, 1945 he married Mary Ellen Mitchell at Emmett, ID. She readily adapted to the isolated lifestyle of the wife of a forest ranger. Ed had a 39-year career with district ranger at Dubois, ID; district ranger at Council, Idaho; forest supervisor at the Caribou Forest at Pocatello, ID; forest supervisor of the Toyabe Forest in Reno, NV; and forest supervisor of the Boise National Forest in Boise, ID. Ed was very active in community affairs. He was president of the Dubois Lions Club and the president of the Clark County Sportsman, president of the Council "X" Club. He was selected the "Boss of the Year" by the Pocatello Chapter of the National Secretary's Association. He is survived by a sister, Gladys Wilson of Portland, OR; two daughters, Elizabeth Heguy of Elko, NV; and Gloria Solari of San Jose, CA, and two grandchildren, Nicholas and Emily Heguy, also of Elko, NV. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years on Feb 25, 2001.

A carpenter who lived in Clark County since 1939, Forrest M. Maw died in Vancouver on Sunday, Aug. 9, 1998. He was 83.

His wife of 62 years, Ardyth, died in February 1998 and a grandson, Michael, died in 1992.

Mr. Maw was born Oct. 28, 1914, in O'Neill, Neb.

He was an Army veteran of World War II and a 50-year member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America.

He was also a member of Vancouver Elks Lodge 823 and enjoyed playing pool and golf, fishing and gardening. Mr. Maw was a fan of Blazer basketball and Mariner baseball.

Survivors include one daughter, Judy E. Johnson of Vancouver; two sons, Richard M. of Vancouver and Donald L. of Lacey, Wash.; one brother, Vernon of Wenatchee; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday at Evergreen Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The casket will be open from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Memorial Gardens Funeral Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Disease Association in care of Good Samaritan Hospital, 1015 N.W. 22nd Ave., Portland, OR 97210.

Forrest M. Maw
A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, 1998, in the Garden of Resurrection in Evergreen Memorial Gardens Cemetery for Forrest M. Maw, who died Aug. 9 at age 83.

Mr. Maw was born Oct. 28, 1914, in O'Neill, Neb., and lived in the Vancouver, Wash., area since 1939. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and worked as a carpenter. His wife of 62 years, Ardyth, died in February.

Survivors include his sons, Richard M. of Vancouver and Donald L. of Lacey, Wash.; daughter, Judy E. Johnson of Vancouver; brother, Vernon of Wenatchee, Wash.; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

The family suggests remembrances to the Alzheimer's Association in care of Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital. Arrangements are by Memorial Gardens Funeral Chapel.

Vernon Russel Maw, 94, a 35 year Wenatchee Valley resident, passed away at Colonial Vista Assisted Living on Friday, October 17, 2014, where he had been residing for the past 15 months. He was born June 2, 1920, in O'Neill, NE to Ralph and Estella (Martin) Maw. Raised on the family farm in Meek, NE, he joined his older brothers, Glenn and Forrest. At age five, the family moved to Neligh, NE. In 1927, his sister, Donna Mae, joined the family. At age 14, he was baptized at the North Bend Christian Church. Upon the completion of the tenth grade, he drove with his father to Washington State, in hopes of making a better living for the family as the Depression was upon them. Finding work in the orchards for the Beebe Orchard company in the Chelan area, they returned to Nebraska to move the rest of the family to Washington. In 1941, he married Neva Butler in a double wedding ceremony with Harold and Barbara Simonsen and the two couples remained lifetime friends. They moved to Vancouver, WA for a short time, where he worked for the Furniture Factory and Kaiser Shipyards. Daughter, Ruth, was born there in 1942, and then they returned to the Chelan area and Beebe Orchard, where their second daughter, Jeanette, was born in 1944. Finding work in Mansfield with the Douglas County Road Department in 1949, started his 25 year career of work with the road department, including the last six years as County Road Supervisor. The family, by this time, also included daughter, Nancy and son, Edwin. Vern built the family home, watched the children graduate from school, get married and start their own families, before his retirement in 1975. After retirement, he and Neva managed the Lake Woods Golf Course in Bridgeport, WA for two years. Then, in 1980, they moved to the Wenatchee Valley. They enjoyed spending the winters in Arizona, golfing, rock hounding, wood carving, the Senior Center and making new friends. He was a member of the Ginkgo Mineral Society, Eagles and was a 50 year member of the Mansfield Grange.

He is survived by his three daughters, Ruth (Mel) Fisher, Jeanette (Dell) Cavadini, and Nancy McDanold; a son, Edwin (Jean) Maw; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Neva; parents; brothers, Glenn and Forrest; sister, Donna Mae; one granddaughter; and one great-grandson.

Vernon taught his children strong work ethics, family fun, and laughter. Forever missed, always in our hearts.

The family would like to thank the staff at Colonial Vista Assisted Living for their friendship and caring ways that made Vernon feel safe and at home.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2014, in Wenatchee, WA at the Eagles Lodge, 1208 N. Wenatchee Avenue at 11:30 a.m. Interment will be at the cemetery in Chelan, WA. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice. Arrangements are by Jones & Jones~Betts Funeral Home, Wenatchee.
