Notes:

Herbert Brown Maw was born in Ogden, Utah, in 1893 to Emma Brown and Ephraim Goodman Maw. He later moved with his family to Salt Lake City where he attended LDS High School and the University of Utah Law School. He received a master's degree and a doctor of law degree from Northwestern University. During World War I he served as a Mormon chaplain in the military. He married Florence Buehler in 1921, and they had four children.

Maw taught speech and political science at the University of Utah and was dean of men from 1928 to 1936. He served for ten years in the state senate and was senate president for four years. He promoted direct primary elections, old-age assistance programs, and government control of public utilities. A member of the Democratic party's liberal wing, he failed in three attempts to win his party's gubernatorial nomination against conservatives, including Governor Henry Blood, whom he challenged in a bitter convention fight in 1936. When the state's first direct primary was held in 1940, Maw defeated Henry D. Moyle for nomination as governor, and went on to win election as Utah's eighth state governor over Republican Don B. Colton, a former congressman.

Maw's top priority in 1941 was the reorganization of numerous commissions, boards, and bureaus under the direction of a handful of departments, one of which, Publicity and Industrial Development (PID), Maw saw as promoting tourism and new business. The PID department built access roads to scenic attractions and film locations in southern Utah, and also built a natural history museum in Vernal; but funding for PID remained controversial throughout Maw's administration.

During World War II, Maw helped to lead a successful campaign to attract major military facilities and related war industries to Utah; this created thousands of jobs, reviving the economy and enabling the state to retire its debts. In 1944, with support from conservative Democrats being only lukewarm, Maw supporters created a controversial pamphlet, Morals and the Mayor, that purported to expose lax law enforcement in Price under its colorful mayor, J. Bracken Lee, the Republican nominee. Maw eked out a slim 1,056-vote victory, unsuccessfully contested by Lee.

Stated goals during Maw's second term were economic security and equal civil rights for all citizens; however, by 1947 he was warning the legislature about the cost of new health, education, and welfare programs. He promoted a major highway building program and approved creation of a state water and power board to oversee development of Colorado River water in Utah. Funding requested by Maw for the pioneer centennial celebration in 1947 attracted many tourists to the state and built the "This Is the Place Monument" at the mouth of Emigration Canyon.

Public criticism of a state welfare system that lent itself to political interference, a highly publicized case against two state liquor system employees, the dissatisfaction of conservative Democrats, and a campaign letter to fellow Mormons that backfired, all helped lead to Maw's defeat by Republican J. Bracken Lee in 1948.

Maw sought a U.S. Senate seat in 1956 but was defeated in the primary. He continued active in private life and maintained a private law practice until he was into his nineties. He died on 17 November 1990.

Lorraine Whipple, age 86, passed away on Tuesday, July 24, 2007 at the Highland Cove Care Center after a long and valiant fight for life. She was born on November 9, 1920, to Charles Bacon and Eva Pearl Maw in Ogden, Utah.

She married Alma Virgil Whipple on February 2, 1942, in the Salt Lake Temple. He passed away in 1971 following a heart attack.

As a child, Lorraine loved being with and singing duets with her "Twinnie", dancing, and she also enjoyed school and was a straight "A" student. She later learned to play the piano and the Hawaiian steel guitar, and loved puzzles, board games and working in her yard. She was a homemaker for many years, and later worked as a secretary at West Lake Jr. High and Granger High, as well as for the LDS Primary General Board.

She was LDS, serving as president, counselor, teacher or secretary of many church organizations. She served a mission to the Massachusetts Boston Mission in 1974-75 and was an avid genealogist. Lorraine showed great strength, energy and tenacity in the midst of many physical problems. Lorraine was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was a member of the Jordan North 2nd Ward for several decades.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 28, 2007, at 2 p.m. at the Valley View Funeral Home Chapel, 4335 West 4100 South, where a visitation was held one hour prior to the services.

Graveside services followed at the Valley View Memorial Park where she was buried beside her beloved husband, Alma, and nearby her twin sister, Lavon.

Our loving mother and grandmother, Evelyn L. Quesada passed away March 26, 2014 at home. She was born December 28, 1929 in Ogden the daughter of Milton O. and Florence L. Howe Maw.

Evelyn spent her days crocheting for everyone and loved donating her items to the homeless; she also enjoyed old western movies.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband of 21 years, Paul Quesada; two grandchildren, Jeremy and Brandi; her parents and one brother.

She is survived by her children, Karen (Tom), Stephanie (Ian), Charlotte (Clifford), Sharon (Gerry) and Jim (Diane); 19 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and 1great-great-grandchild.

Obituary:
On Saturday, August 26, 2017, Herbert Warren Maw returned to heaven after almost 95 years of a great life on Earth. Born November 25, 1922, to Herbert Brown Maw and Florence Beuhler in Salt Lake City, he was the oldest of 4 children. At the time of his passing, his loving family surrounded him, including his sweetheart of 65 years, Joan Gerber Maw, whom he married in the Salt Lake Temple, and their children, Katherine (Craig, deceased), Richard (Nena), Karen (Eric), and Sharon (Scott). He is survived by his sisters LaRue (Ben) and Jeanne, 19 grandchildren, and 40 great-grandchildren. His daughter Judith, younger brother Ralph, son-in-law Craig, and granddaughter Allison preceded him in death.

Raised in Salt Lake City, he graduated as valedictorian from East High School and began his college studies at the University of Utah. He received a commission to the United States Naval Academy, from which he graduated in 1946. He served in the Navy during the Korean War and in the Naval Reserve for 22 years, rising to the rank of Captain. He loved his country and the American flag. He later received an MBA from the University of Utah.

Warren was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many callings, including a mission to the Philippines with his wife. In later years, Warren spent hours each day on the computer indexing names for family history.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 2, 2017, at 11:00 a.m., at the East Mill Creek 7th Ward, 3408 Celeste Way, Salt Lake City. Visitation will occur on Friday, September 1, 2017, from 6-8 p.m. at Wasatch Lawn Cemetery, 3401 S. Highland Drive, and for 90 minutes prior to the funeral services at the Church. In lieu of flowers, Warren requested donations to the LDS Church Missionary Fund.

Florence LaRue Maw Hathaway, 92, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2017.

LaRue was born March 15, 1925 to Florence Buehler and Herbert Brown Maw. She is a product of loving parents and siblings, East High, and the U. of U., where along the way she forged friendships that spanned all of her life.

She married Benson L. "Ben" Hathaway in 1948; they were sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple in 1949 and then embarked on a sixty-nine year adventure of teaching and loving people and life in the Salt Lake Valley; Superior, Wyoming; Arlington Heights, Illinois; Vancouver, Washington; and various other stops in her life's journey.

LaRue loved and taught music. She instilled that love in her family and in all she served. She taught music at Superior Elementary, Evergreen JHS and Olympus JHS, and other schools in the Salt Lake Valley and Illinois.

She molded innumerable groups of rag-tag youths, marginally talented adults, and various iterations of her children and Ben into veritable choirs of angels to share her beloved music at church events, music festivals, shopping centers, and rest homes in whatever community she lived. Christmases in LaRue's world were like pages from a storybook, and her "Road Shows" were legendary.

And there was never an empty seat at LaRue's table. Her eye was toward the lonely, those outside the gate, and those who hurt. Whether it was a student, a neighbor, or just someone in need of a meal, LaRue saw to it that everyone had something to eat, something to do, somewhere to be, …a friend.

Along LaRue's way, spirits were lifted, lives saved, and the love of God and man enhanced. LaRue ever sought to contribute to that which was good in the world with never a thought for herself.

Unfortunately, a cerebral aneurysm tripped up LaRue in her sixtieth year. At first undaunted, LaRue's health finally slowed her capacity to serve. Having given so much, LaRue begrudgingly succumbed to the reality of becoming a recipient of another's service. But even in that role she enriched her family's and friends' capacity to love, and made a saint out of her beloved Ben.

LaRue loved her Father in Heaven, her Savior and her neighbors, and served them faithfully through her lifetime of worship and service in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

LaRue leaves behind her husband of nearly sixty-nine years; children, Ann (Rich) Gillespie, Amy Christensen, Jane (Mike) Stout, Ben (Laurie), and Russell; sister, Jean Nibley; sixteen grandchildren; and thirty-six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Shirley; brothers, Ralph and Warren Maw; a great-granddaughter, Samantha; and a heavenly choir of extended family and friends.

LaRue's family thanks — with the utmost love and deepest appreciation — the caregivers at Brighton Hospice and the Abbington Holladay for their tender care of LaRue and Ben.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 5, 2017 in the Olympus Stake Center (the pagoda church), 2675 East 4430 South, with a viewing the evening before from 6:00 to 8:00 and on the day of the funeral from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m.

Early Life: Jeanne was born June 19, 1930, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Herbert Brown Maw and Florence Buehler Maw. Jeanne loved her time at East High School and the University of Utah participating in choirs, tennis, dancing and theater.
Life's Work | Service | Interests: On November 20, 1951, Jeanne married John Marlow Larson in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Two years after John's untimely death, she married James William Nibley on May 13, 1976. She enjoyed living in Oregon, relishing its beauty through many camping and boating adventures with her family. She treasured her membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Faithfully, she fulfilled callings; she served as Relief Society and Primary president, temple worker, Relief Society general board member, and choir leader for 15 years. Emma "Jeanne" Maw Larson Nibley, of Salt Lake City, Utah, returned home due to effects of age and dementia. She was 87.
Family Message: "Jeanne would like you to know she is in a wonderful place where she will be singing and dancing to her heart's content. She taught us many valuable lessons, such as: eat desserts often, laugh freely, brighten people's day, and look on the positive side of life."

Mona Rae died July 25, 2019.

She was born March 13, 1928 in Buffalo, New York to Ramona Clegg and Raymond B. Maw. She lived in Pineville, Kentucky for ten years before heading to Salt Lake City with her family. She graduated from East High School in the "Gold Medal Class" of 45. She also graduated from the University of Utah with a BS degree in elementary education. While at the U., she was a member of the Tri Delta sorority.

In 1949, she married R. Derrall Ballard and together they had three sons: John L., David T., and Marc C. Ballard. Derrall died in 1985. She became reacquainted with an old friend and in 1991 she married Robert Cole. He died in 2005.

She loved traveling with her cousins and then with her husband, Bob. Mona was a teacher at Highland Park for twenty years, retiring early so she could travel the world. She was a member of the LDS Church.

She is survived by her son, Marc (Julie); daughter-in-law, Diane (David's wife); brother, John Maw (Gwen); eight grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her two husbands and two sons. Mona had a special love for Bob's family and especially Kathy and John Shepherd and Mike and Larae Cole. They were always caring and loving to her and never forgot her. Many thanks to them.

There will be a graveside ceremony held on Saturday, August 3, 2019 in the Salt Lake City Cemetery. On the following day, Sunday, August 4, 2019, there will be an open house for family and friends to share their memories and pay their respects from 5:00-7:00 p.m. in the Foothill First, Second, and Third Ward Building, 1933 South 2100 East, Salt Lake City.

Grant Streeper Maw

August 18, 1926 ~ December 6, 2020 (age 94)



Grant S. Maw passed to the next life with his family at his side on Sunday, December 6, 2020. He was greeted with much love and joy by those who had gone before. Grant left behind his earthly loved ones and, thankfully, the wheelchair that confined him for nearly 30 years. Despite his struggle with FSHD, a form of muscular dystrophy, Grant never complained and never stopped doing his best to live life to the fullest and "carry on." His example of unconditional love and enduring trials with faith, courage, and a constant smile has left a legacy that will long impact the life of his posterity and all that knew him.

Grant was born in Ogden, Utah, to Glen Jones Maw and Ethelyn Anna Streeper, the eldest of two sons. His brother Lowell preceded him in death in 2015. He graduated from Ogden High School and went on to earn Bachelor and Juris Doctorate Law degrees from the University of Utah. In 1944, he was drafted into the Army, serving in World War II for two years and then honorably discharged at the rank of Staff Sergeant. During his service, he earned many medals, including the Bronze Star, while serving at General McArthur's Headquarters in Manila and Tokyo. Grant's service to his country continued with a career as a Patent Lawyer in the JAG office at Hill Air Force Base. Additionally, he practiced law privately and served as a part-time federal magistrate in the Department of Justice. Grant also taught Business Law evening classes at Weber State University.

As a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he held many positions that included Ward Clerk, 70's Quorum President, Ward Mission Leader, Employment Specialist, and more. Grant served several missions for the Church. The first was in Toronto, Canada, in 1948. He was serving a mission in the Ogden Spanish Branch when he met his wife, Mildred June Hurst, in 1957. In 1982, he and Mildred served in the Baton Rouge Louisiana Mission. He regularly shared his testimony of the truthfulness of the Gospel and eternal families.

Grant and Mildred were married on May 29, 1958, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple and spent their married lives together in Ogden, where they raised their three daughters. He was active in civic service, including the Sons of the Utah Pioneers.

Grant will fondly be known for his creativity and love of writing. His highly imaginative, impromptu bedtime stories are still vivid decades later in the minds of his children and grandchildren, who will pass them on for generations in a book he authored for his descendants. He spent hours a day writing. These included stories about dinosaurs, magic, monsters, and fantasy. Treasured writings for family include analyses of Zenos from the Book of Mormon and Giants in the Old Testament.

On the day he passed, he perfectly recited some of his favorite poems to his family, The Owl and the Pussy Cat, The Gingham Dog and the Calico Cat, and Wynken, Blynken, and Nod. We imagine Dad sailing on that river of crystal light into a sea of dew. This Christmas Eve, memories of his recitations of Santa in an Uptown Flat and A Tale of John Henry Paul Brown will warm our hearts.

Grant was a child at heart for all of his 94 years. Some of our favorite memories include his expert singing and harmonica playing. We fondly remember his versions of Turkey in the Straw and the Big Rock Candy Mountain. In his youth, hiking Ogden's mountain ranges and spending time in nature occupied much of his free time. In later years, he would play dominoes, rook, and scrabble for hours with his family and grandchildren. The latter remember trips to neighborhood parks and especially, Farr's Ice cream as highlights to their visits. But most important was the time he spent listening and enjoying the company of family and friends.

Grant's Patriarchal blessing states his purity and sweetness of life, which touched and inspired all that knew him through his generosity, kindness, sense of humor, wit, courage, and perseverance. His life of service to others is an inspiration to all.

The family would like to thank the many aides and healthcare professionals who served him lovingly during the last years of his life. We especially want to thank Harmony hospice for their loving care in his final days - Devin, Emily, and Blake "his buddy" (who was his aide for over ten years). Many caregivers, too numerous to name, have become dear friends who visited him regularly, including the last day of his life. We love and thank them for their service.

Grant is survived by his wife, Mildred June Hurst, and their three daughters, Meridee Theresa Maw Calder (Glen), Cynthia Ann Maw, Jeanette Maw McMurtry (John); 8 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Glen and Ethelyn, and brother, Lowell.

Some of Grant's last counsel to his family was to "Be Happy" with whatever life brings. The following quotes embody his philosophy.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 12, 2020 at 2 p.m. at Lindquist's Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Friends may visit with family on Saturday from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Ogden City Cemetery.

Lowell Streeper Maw

Our loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, Lowell Streeper Maw, passed away on March 31, 2015. He was born to Glen Jones Maw and Ethelyn Streeper on October 7, 1928 in Ogden, Utah. He married his sweetheart, Joyce Ann Bramwell, on August 19, 1966 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
He graduated from Ogden High School and Weber College. He was employed at several local businesses, Defense Depot Ogden and Hill Air Force Base, where he worked in electronic repair and material management.

He was an active member of the LDS Church and held several positions on the ward level.

He enjoyed stamp collecting, HO model trains, astronomy and amateur radio. He had several positions in the Ogden Amateur Radio Club (1950 to 1960) and had a long service in the Army Military Affiliate Radio System.

He is survived by his wife; Joyce; children, John B. (Laurie) Maw, Lori Thompson Maw and Lori Ann (Charles) Putnam; brother and Grant S. (Mildred) Maw and several grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and children, William Glen Maw and Jamie Maw Strasters.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 3, 2015 at the Rushton Heights Ward Chapel, 1550 Rushton. A viewing will be held on Thursday, April 2nd from 6 to 8 p.m. at Myers Ogden Mortuary, 845 Washington Blvd and prior to services from 12 to 12:40 p.m. at the church.

Interment will be at the Ogden City Cemetery.
