    Biography:
Comments: I am updating a 1997 publication which contains biographical notes on all officers of the 23rd Foot, or Royal Welch Fusiliers from their formation in 1689 to 1914. I served in the regiment, and am working on various aspects of their history, instead of getting on with my own family's history! Your work is most impressive and clear.

I have been concentrating on the Napoleonic period as a book is being written based on the diaries and letters of those who served in the regiment at that time, one of them being J H S (we had initials only) Maw, about whom there was a very sketchy entry. The Army List , however, recorded him as J__H__L__ (again, giving his initials only). In manuscript, I think a capital L and S might look very similar. To my surprise and delight typing JHL Maw into Google brought me to your website.

There is no doubt in my mind that JHL and JHS Maw are the same person.

The document which convinced me was his obituary in The Gentleman's Magazine of 1812, a copy of which is attached.[P.S. I don't seem to be able to do this] It has been reprinted in a comparatively recent publication, namely A History of the Peninsular War, Vol. VIII - The Biographical Dictionary of British Officers Killed and Wounded 1808-1814, by John A. Hall and published in 1998 by Greenhill Books, London (ISBN 1 85367 315 3). John Maw's entry reads:

MAW, J. H. L., Capt., 23rd Foot: Capt., Army, 3 Dec. 1806; Capt., 23rd Foot, 9 July 1807. Killed, storming of Badajoz, 6 April 1812 [London Gazette]. Obituary, The Gentleman's Magazine, June 1812, pp. 594-5 [April 7. Fell gloriously in the arms of victory, at the storming of Badajoz, in his 29th year, Capt. Maw, of the 23d reg. or Royal Welsh Fusileers, eldest son of John Henry M. esq. of Belle-Vue, near Doncaster. In him the service has lost a zealous and intelligent officer, and his friends have to lament a most honourable, well-disposed young man, a cheerful companion, and a good Christian. He served on the Quarter-master General's Staff, at the battles of Vimiera and Talavera, in the Peninsula, under the Earl of Wellington, and previously in the same department of the army under Lord Cathcart, in Scotland.].

My still-sketchy entry in our book, to which I must add information from his obituary, now reads:

    MAW, John Henry Shaw
He was christened on 27 September 1783 in All Saints Church, Wakefield, Yorkshire, the son of John Henry Maw and his wife Margaret (née Stovin).
Commissioned ensign in 6th (or 1st Warwickshire) Regiment of Foot on 4 April 1800, lieutenant on 17 June 1802, and captain on 3 December 1806.
He became captain, Royal Welch Fusiliers on 9 July 1807 and was killed, aged 29, at the storming of Badajoz on 6 April 1812.

I would be interested to know if you agree with my conclusion as to his identity and whether you have anything to add about him.

    Sincerely,

    Richard Sinnett

    Died:
His will was proved on the 22nd May 1812.
