Dorothea Maw Alvord DeYoung
1912– 2009

OGDEN— Our mother was born July 12, 1912, in Plain City, Utah to John Maw and Annie C. Polson Maw. She passed away peacefully on Valentine's Day.

She married Vern G. Alvord on December 22, 1939, they later divorced. In June of 1950 she married Lionel DeYoung, they later divorced.

Dorothea taught school in Weber County schools for 40 years, and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma. She was active in the LDS Church where she served two short term missions and worked in the Ogden Temple. Dorothea also loved working as a volunteer at McKay Dee hospital for many years.

She is survived by two daughters, Luanne Walters and Karla Shelton and one son, Devern (Pam) Alvord. Her Step-children were very important in her life, Sam (Sandra) DeYoung and Carol (Joe) Todeschi. She is loved by 18 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Dorothea was preceded in death by her son, John Alvord, son-in-law, Don Walters, granddaughter, Amy Alvord and two great-grandsons.

The family will never be able to express our appreciation to the staff of Legacy House, and Legacy Hospice for the loving care and kindness they all gave her.

We will be celebrating her life at funeral services to be held on Wednesday, February 18, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Lindquist Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd.

Friends and family may call Wednesday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Plain City Cemetery. Send condolences to the family at: www.lindquistmortuary.com.

He was 84 years old.Mr. Maw, who was a partner in the New York law firm of Cravath Swaine & Moore, joined the State Department as a legal adviser to Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger late in 1973. Over the next six months, he traveled frequently with Mr. Kissinger on the Secretary's ''shuttle diplomacy'' trips to the Middle East.In June 1974, Mr. Maw was promoted to Under Secretary of State in charge of security assistance programs. As Under Secretary, he served as the special Presidential representative at the series of Law of the Sea conferences in 1975.In 1976, Mr. Maw returned to his law partnership with Cravath Swaine and went to London to head the firm's office there. He remained in London until his retirement in 1981.Mr. Maw, who was a native of Provo, Utah, graduated from Brigham Young University in 1925 and cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1928, where he was an editor of the law re. He joined Cravath Swaine the same year and became a partner in 1939.He was a member of the American and New York State and New York City Bar associations and was president of the city bar association in 1954-55. From 1979 to 1981, he was chairman of the State Department's public advisory committee on the Law of the Sea.Mr. Maw is survived by two sons, Michael B. and Carlyle Jr., both of Washington; a daughter, Susan deWilde Hykin of Victoria, British Columbia, and a sister, Jean Woodman of Arlington, Vt.

Jean Florence Maw Woodman

ARLINGTON – Jean Florence Maw Woodman, 103, died peacefully at her home in West Arlington on Saturday, January 16, 2010. Born November 4, 1906, in Provo, Utah, daughter of Charles and Margaret Maw, she received her undergraduate degree from Brigham Young University and her master's from Stanford University, both in English. Having taught school briefly at an Indian reservation in Utah as a young woman, she moved to New York City and pursued various careers including acting, editorial work for a publication of the American Foundation for the Blind and later Sports Illustrated, also working with Thomas Wolfe.

On August 15, 1936, Jean married Herbert B. "Woody" Woodman; he predeceased her in 1991.

In 1940, Jean's novel, "Glory Spent," was published. In 1943, Jean and Woody bought an old farmhouse on River Road and began renovating and improving it, traveling to Vermont from New York City some weekends and large portions of the summers. In 1983, they retired and moved permanently to Arlington.

Jean was a keen and wide-ranging reader, an expert gardener, a lover of classical music and maintained a wide circle of friends. She avidly followed politics and was a supporter of environmental issues.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and John Stopford of London, England; grandsons and their wives, Robert "Robin" and Astrid Stopford, and Nicholas and Zoë Stopford, all of London; four great-grandchildren, Oliver, Lucy, Sam and Penelope, all of London; as well as numerous nephews and nieces.

A memorial service in celebration of Jean's life will be conducted in July on a date to be announced. Friends wishing to make a memorial donation may choose to donate to the Martha Canfield Memorial Free Library or the Arlington Rescue Squad, through Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, PO Box 528, Arlington, VT 05250. Stella Buckley Phelps
(February 1, 1912 - August 18, 2007)

Stella Eliza Buckley Phelps, 95, died Saturday, August 18, 2007. She was a strong, smart and resolute woman with a huge heart and a wonderful laugh. She had a tremendous life force that extended her years on earth far beyond the calculations of many medical professionals. She loved the world but most of all she loved her family. She had an extraordinary capacity for hope and for happy endings that even overwhelming odds could not diminish. She reserved the right to be herself and allowed others the same courtesy. She was deeply loved, admired and respected.

She leaves behind a great legacy of memories to those of us who must go on without her. Quite simply, she made the world a better place. She was the center of a devoted, large family in which she took enormous pride. Children were drawn to her throughout her life and many of them found comfort and solace in her arms.

Stella was a wonderful role model because of her resilience, courage, humor and even her stubbornness.

She had an unfailing and infallible faith in God and in her religion.

This adage epitomized her philosophy of life: "You can weep because rose bushes have thorns or you can rejoice that thorn bushes have roses."

Stella was born February 1, 1912, the first child of Charles Joseph and Millie Maw Buckley.

She married George A. Phelps after a courtship that centered around dancing at the old White City Dance Hall in Ogden. George died in 1972 but he lived on in her heart. Their marriage was later sealed for time and eternity in the LDS Temple. She loved talking about George after he died and she often remarked how much she looked forward to the day she would be with him again.

She worked for many years in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as a Primary president and in other organizations. She also volunteered for several years at the Deaf and Blind School.

Stella took her rights as a citizen to heart and she never failed to vote. She had strong opinions but she was not averse to changing her mind, if she could be persuaded that she was mistaken.

She was a lifelong reader and she was an excellent pinochle player.

She will be very missed by those who were lucky enough to know and love her. The world will be a bleaker place without her, but it is a comfort to imagine how welcomed she will be in her new heavenly home.

Stella is survive by her children, Ralph Charles Phelps, Oceanside, CA; Arlene (Charles) Edson, Clinton; Carma (Keith) Coleman, Ogden; Margaret (Dave) Vaughn, Riverdale; Marty (Gary) Humphreys, Ogden; and Pat (Jack) Singleton, Washington Terrace. She is survived by a progeny that extends to five generations.

She is also survived by two beloved sisters, Laura Christofferson, North Ogden; and Florence Moss, Ogden.

Interment, Lindquist's Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.

Elsie Louise Hipwell Costley, 92, passed away peacefully on August 3, 2013. She was born in Plain City, Utah, on October 3, 1920, to Llewellyn and Stella Maw Hipwell. She graduated from Weber High School. She was a lifelong resident of Plain City. All in all, Elsie enjoyed good health and was quoted as saying, "It's been a good life."

She married Paul Delbert Costley on March 5, 1941, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He passed away on May 8, 1992.

Elsie was a faithful member of the Plain City 2nd LDS Ward, serving as a visiting teacher until the age of 91.

She retired from the IRS, after 19 years of service. She enjoyed her associations with her friends in the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers.

Elsie was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a quiet and loving woman, who enjoyed the beauty of her flower garden. She taught those around her by her example of love and service.

Surviving are her four children, Janet (Gordon) Hadley, Nancy (Sherman) Barker, Alan (Bonnie) Costley, and Gregory (Terri) Costley; 16 grandchildren, and 47 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Earl and Elmer Hipwell, and her sister, Ruth Rogers Charlton.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 10, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the Plain City 2nd Ward, 2952 North 4200 West, Plain City. Friends may visit with family on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist's North Ogden Mortuary, 2140 N. Washington Blvd. and on Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church.

Interment, Plain City Cemetery.

The family wishes to thank the anonymous donor who sent Elsie flowers monthly for many years.

Ruth Mae Hipwell Rogers Charlton

Ruth Mae Hipwell Rogers Charlton, 90, passed away on January 10, 2013 at her home surrounded by her family.

She was born in Plain City on July 6, 1922 to Stella Jane Maw and Llewellyn Hipwell.

She married Harold Archie Rogers on March 30, 1940 in Harrisville, UT. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on April 12, 1944. Harold passed away on August 15, 1991. She married Edward Paul Charlton on October 10, 1998. Paul passed away on April 8, 2009.

Ruth lived in Plain City her whole life. She graduated from Weber High School and Seminary and was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

She loved spending time with her family, traveling and bowling. Ruth was a devoted mother to her eight children. She retired from IRS.

Ruth is survived by her eight children, Diane (Glen) Campbell, Beverly (Clark) Simmons, Elaine (Bob) Cliften, Michael (Chris) Rogers, Dennis (Sharilyn) Rogers, Sheila (Steve) Jaques, Craig (Barbara) Rogers, Brent (Denise) Rogers, 35 grandchildren, 85 great-grandchildren, 13 great-great-grandchildren, and sister, Elsie Costley.

She was preceded in death by her two husbands, Harold and Paul; 2 brothers, Elmer and Earl Hipwell; two sons-in-law, Vernon C. Andersen and Fred G. Umbrell, II; one grandchild, Nancy Umbrell and one great-grandchild, Logan Emily Rogers.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 17, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the Plain City 2nd Ward, 2952 North 4200 West, Plain City. Friends may visit with family on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist's North Ogden Mortuary, 2140 North Washington Blvd., and Thursday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church.

Interment, Plain City Cemetery.

Orlo Steadwell Maw, age 82, passed away of heart failure on April 2, 2004 surrounded by his loving family. He was a very special husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.
He was born on September 20, 1921 in Plain City, Utah to Wilmer John Maw and Selma Wood.
Orlo married his forever sweetheart Rosella Ann Larkin on February 9, 1945 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
He graduated from Weber High School in 1939 and attended Weber College until 1941. He went on to own and operate Maw Equipment, a family owned Case Equipment dealership.
Orlo served faithfully as bishop on two separate occasions, he was in the High Council, was High Priest Group Leader, he was a temple worker at the Ogden LDS Temple for many years, served in the Texas/Louisiana Mission from February 1942- April 1944 and served in many other callings throughout his life as an active LDS Church member.
A long time member of the Plain City Lions Club, Orlo also served as President and in other positions to better the community. Orlo served in the U. S. Army from 1944-1946 in Texas and in Europe.
He is survived by his wife, Rosella, Plain City; and his daughters Annette (Dallas) Taylor, Plain City; Kathleen (Kris) Widdison, Yorba Linda, CA.; sons Lane (Jeanie) Maw, Plain City; Brent Maw, Roy; Bruce (Laura) Maw, Orem; Dean (Jana) Maw, North Ogden.
He is also survived by his brother Eugene (Fern) Maw, Roy; sister Idona (Elvin) Taylor, Nampa, ID; brother Farrell (Marie) Maw, Greely, CO; and sister Emma (Marvin) Heslop, Ogden. Orlo was the proud grandfather of 28 and great-grandfather of 15.
Funeral service will be held Wednesday, April 7, 2004 at 11 a.m. at the Plain City 2nd Ward chapel, 2952 N. 4200 W., Plain City, with Bishop Mark Montgomery officiating.
Friends may call at the Larkin & Sons Mortuary, 496 24th St., Ogden, Tuesday, from 5 to 8 p.m., and at the ward chapel Wednesday, from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m.
Interment, Plain City Cemetery.

R. John (Johnnie) Maw

Roy John Maw passed away peacefully April 18, 2017 at his home, surrounded by his family. Johnnie was born April 5, 1926 in Plain City to Rufus and Frances Dance Maw. He grew up working for the family business and attended Weber County Schools. He interrupted his high school education to join the U.S. Navy when he was 17, serving in the South Pacific during World War II. John retired from the civil service at Hill Air Force Base. He has spent his retirement farming, raising beef cattle, and raising and racing Quarter Horses.

John married his junior high sweetheart, Norma Jean Folkman in the Salt Lake Temple on May 10, 1946. They have lived their entire married life in Plain City. In May, they would have been married 71 years.

John was active in the LDS Church, where he was a High Priest and served in several positions.

Johnnie was a devoted family man. His greatest joy was his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. If you ask anyone them, they will tell you they were his favorite. "Gramps" showered them with Smarties, Twenty Dollar Bills and Love.

Johnnie is survived by his sweetheart, Norma Jean; his children; Dan (Uraina) Maw, Joel (Dawn) Maw, Cindy Maw, and Karen (Martin) Denney. They have 14 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren and 3 more on the way. Also surviving is his sister Karole Crompton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Alice Taylor and brother Junior B. Maw.

The family wishes to offer a special thanks to Hospice Care of Northern Utah, most especially Ashley, Ronal, Nancy and Eileen for their compassionate care of our beloved "Gramps".

Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Monday April 24, 2017, at the Plain City 2nd Ward, 2952 N 4200 W in Plain City. A viewing will be held at the church on Sunday April 23, 2017, from 6 to 8 pm and prior to the services from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Our loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother LaRee Maw Felt passed away gently on Saturday afternoon July 19, 2014. She was 84.

LaRee was born on August 19, 1929 in Ogden, Utah to Gilbert E. and Grace Brown Maw. She attended Plain City School and graduated from Weber High School. In her early life she became an accomplished singer and participated in many rodeo and Plain City events. She attended Weber State College for 2 years where she met and fell in love with Lowell Jackson Felt. They were married on September 1, 1949. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple in March of 1997.

She worked for First Security Bank and Bank of Utah. Her family loved to ski at Snow Basin and hiked all of the mountains in the surrounding area. Her husband took a job in Oroville, Washington in 1969 where LaRee worked for Oro Fruit Apple Company as a secretary and accounts manager. She loved the gospel and served faithfully in her church callings.

LaRee is survived by her son, Vince L. Felt (Alyson); daughter, Suzanne Sink (Jerry); eight grandchildren, Kristi, Ryan, Adam, Judson, Abby, Anthony, Emily, and Taylor; and nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her two sisters that she loved dearly; Elaine Maw Deru and Delora Maw Fowers.

LaRee was preceded in death by her husband Lowell J. Felt, parents, and 3 brothers.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist's Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Friends may visit with family on Saturday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Plain City Cemetery.

John Lloyd Alvord was born on August 18, 1948, in Ogden, UT. He lived in South Ogden, next to the Ogden Country Club where he developed a love of golf.
In 1967, he served an LDS mission to Ohio, followed by an education at Weber State in accounting. In 1971 he married Launa Weaver and began a career in the IRS. They lived in New York, Minnesota, and Pennsylvania, but returned to Utah with their children. John lived in North Ogden, but moved back to his childhood home in South Ogden in 2007.
He is survived by many, including his mother Dorothea DeYoung.

Floyd Albert Maw, 87, passed away on Monday, January 27, 2020. He was born on May 21, 1932, in Plain City, Utah, the son of Leslie T. Maw and Ruth Hazel Poulsen.

He married the love of his life, Karen Searcy, on April 29, 1953, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.

Floyd was a faithful servant and active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in various church callings, but his favorite was as a scout master. He had a passion for the scriptures that was only equaled by his love for family.

As a young boy, he was a great support to his father on the family farm. He played the trumpet and loved to sing. He worked for Union Pacific Railroad, Boise Cascade, and BMC West. He also owned a saw-sharpening and door-hanging business. He enjoyed ballroom and square dancing with his sweetheart. He also loved gardening, farming, raising animals, and hard work. He loved mincemeat pie, eggnog, wheat berries, and honey. Floyd was an early riser. He was always up and meeting the paperboy by 4:00 a.m.

Floyd is survived by his children, Gary S. Maw, Valerie M. Barker, AnnaLee (Jerry) Olsen, Joyce M. (Scott) Dean, Kenny (Leisha) Maw, and Richard F. "Ricky" (Jolene) Maw; 24 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren; siblings, Blain (Janet) Maw, Iris (Allen) Kap; brother-in-law, Kenneth Searcy; and by daughter-in-law, Paula Miller.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Karen Maw; son, Dirk Dee Maw, daughter in-law, Tami Maw Hendricks, son-in-law, Alan Barker; and sister-in-laws, Jean Barker and Hazel Searcy.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 4, 2020, at 2:00 p.m. at the Plain City 2nd Ward, 2952 North 4200 West, Plain City, Utah. Friends may visit with family on Monday the 3rd from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist's North Ogden Mortuary, 2140 N. Washington Blvd. and on Tuesday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the church. Interment, Plain City Cemetery.
