JOHN P. MAW

A staunch member of the Old Men's Club died in Mayview, Mo., at the home of Mrs. Thomas Patterson, Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, May 8, 1917. His death was due to old age and general debility. Two days before he died he suffered a stroke of paralysis.

Mr. Maw was born in Lancaster Shire, England, November 20, 1824, and was 92 years of age. He was married on the 1st day of January, 1846, the 11th day of the same month he and his bride sailed from Liverpool going down the ocean into the Gulf of Mexico, and then up the Mississippi to Wisconsin, taking eight weeks to make the trip. To this union three children were born who were soon left motherless.

His second marriage was to Elizabeth Stephens of New York, November 18, 1865, and shortly after came to Missouri and settled on a farm near Cedar Grove in Lafayette county. He was a harness maker by trade and moved to Mayview, where he engaged in that business. His wife died in January 1917.

Besides one son, Robert, by his first wife, who now lives in Washington, there remains five daughters, Mrs. Sadie Blackburn and Bertha Drummond, both of Colorado, Mrs. Jettie Chandler of Chicago, Mrs. Gertie Wheatly of Jefferson City, and Mrs. Kate Kerr of this place.

He spent 75 years of his life in the cause of his Mater, being a member of the Christian church. His faith was of the highest type; always ready to say a good word for the advancement of the cause of Christ. The last few years of his life he was hindered by being blind and almost deaf.

We can truly say a good man has bone to his reward.

The funeral was conducted by Eld. Bedford of Higginsville, Wednesday, May 8 1917, at 1:30 o'clock at the Christian church. The remains were taken to Mayview Chapel cemetery and laid beside his wife to wait the call to come up higher, and receive the applaudits of "Well done good and faithful servant, enter into the joys of thy Lord."

Harold Wheatly To Be Reburied Here With Honors

The body of 1st Lieut. Harold Wheatly, son of Judge and Mrs. Foster Wheatly, will arrive tomorrow for reburial at National cemetery. Wheatly was killed April 11, 1944, in a bombing raid over Germany. Wheatly was born in Jefferson City Sept. 10, 1920, and was educated in the public schools and the Junior college. He was among the first to receive flight training under the Civilian Pilot Training program at the old Robertson airport across the river. The lieutenant served in both the naval and army air arms during the war. He first entered the naval air service, but after eight months was discharged because of an ear condition. He later joined the army and was subsequently commissioned a bombardier. He received his training at San Angelo, Tex., and was sent to Europe in May, 1943. At the time of his death the 23-year-old officer was participating in the largest bombing raid in the history of his command. The attack was made by 2,000 planes and was directed at Oschersleben and Bernberg, Germany. He had already received the air medal with three oak leaf clusters for meritorious service when he was killed. Surviving are his fiancee, Miss Doris McCubbin, a teacher at Southwest Baptist college, Bolivar; his parents, Judge and Mrs. Foster Wheatly, one brother, Chief Boatswain R. W. Wheatly of Newport, R.I., and one sister, Miss Jerene Wheatly of the home. Wheatly was the only member of the I.O.O.F. lodge here to lose his life in the war. He was also a member of the Roy Sone post. Veterans of Foreign Wars. The latter organization will perform the military honors at his burial.
