Elmer C. Gaedtke, 74, a retired 30 year U.S. Navy veteran, died at a local hospital yesterday after a long illness.
He was born in Milwaukee, Wisc., April 9, 1904, a son of the late Gustave and Martha (Boerner) Gaedtke.
Serving in the Navy during World Wars I and II, after his discharge Mr. Gaedtke was a self-employed builder and contractor. He was a member of the American Legion and a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church.
Survivors are one daughter, Mrs. Miles (Ellen K.) Johnston, of 22 Parker Drive, with whom he made his home; two sons, Edward Gaedtke and James F. Gaedtke of Nashua; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins. Another son, Charles E. Gaedtke, died many years ago.
The Zis-Sweeney Funeral Home, 26 Kinsley St., is in charge or arrangements.

Ronald Mortimer, age 60, of Ironton, died on Saturday May 4, 1974, of an accidental drowning at Lake Lee in Cazenovia. Born in Sauk County, he was a farmer in the Ironton area. Mr. Mortimer was a member of the Sauk County Board of Supervisors, currently serving on the Highway Committee. The treasurer of Valton Cemetery Association, a member of the Board of Directors at the State Bank of Cazenovia, Reedsburg Masonic Lodge No. 79, and Eastern Star.
Survivors include his wife, Virgie; a daughter, Mrs. Evan Hanko of Cazenovia; three sons, Dennis of LaValle, Edward of Baraboo, and Ronald of Woodstock, Ill.; thirteen grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Arnold Blakeslee of Middleton; three brothers, Walter Mortimer of Ironton, Duane of Columbus, and Dean of Kankakee, Ill.; and a foster brother, Elmer Gaedtke of Nashua, New Hampshire.

Dean 'Casey' Russell Mortimer, 89, of Blue River died Monday, March 13, 2017 at Boscobel Care and Rehab Center. He was born on October 23, 1927 in Valton, Wisconsin the son of Dolph and Millie (Stowe) Mortimer. Dean attended Valton Grade School and Wonewoc High School. Upon graduation, he attended Wisconsin State University in Platteville for two years, where he majored in agriculture. From 1951-53, Dean served in the US Army in Korea and was a member of the American Legion and the VFW. After Dean's honorable discharge, in 1954 he completed his Bachelors of Science Degree in Agriculture from Platteville. Dean began his teaching career in Blue River. It was there he met Connie Powers and the couple was married on June 14, 1956. Dean and Connie moved many places but it was in Greeley, Colorado where he received his Masters Degree in Guidance and Counseling. The last move was to Kankakee, Illinois where he attended the University of Illinois for advanced counseling. It was in Kankakee he completed 37 years of teaching. The couple finally retired to Blue River in 1991. Dean was an active member of the Blue River United Methodist Church. Dean loved to fish and hunting, especially when he lived out west. He and Connie were fortunate to go on many trips after retiring.
Dean is survived by his wife of 60 years Connie of Blue River; three daughters: Denise Holmes of Bloomington, IL, Marcia (Dr. Barry) Erdman of Menasha, WI, Cheryl (Tom) Carlin of Boscobel, WI; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister: Muriel (Bliss) Blakeslee of Ironton; brother: Duane 'Dick' (Beth) Mortimer of Columbus; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents Dolph and Millie, two brothers Ronald 'Mike', Walter 'Pat.'
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 19, 2017 at the Blue River United Methodist Church at 12:00 PM, with Pastor Jeanne Jones officiating. Burial with military graveside rites will follow in the Blue River Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Sunday, March 19, 2017 at the Blue River United Methodist Church from 10:30 AM until the time of the service at 12:00 PM. The family suggests memorials in Dean's name be directed to the Blue River United Methodist Church.

Funeral services for Herschel Ells, 50, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church with the Rev Robert Wegner of Harrisburg officiating.
Burial will be in the Wagner cemetery with the Crosby Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Ells was born at Platte Aug, 16. 1920 to Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Ells and died unexpectedly March 19 at Wagner. On Feb. 14, 1942 he married Mabel Hyde at Hartington, Neb. and they lived on a farm until moving to Wagner in 1949 and he engaged in the trucking business.

PFC WALTER E. BABCOCK

On June 6, 1944 (D-Day), the beginning of the end of the Atlantic part of World War II began with the invasion of Normandy. The successful invasion on the northern coast of France was a very complicated and deadly operation. When completed, it allowed the allies to establish a foothold from which they could strike out and drive the German army from Northern Europe back to Germany. The seizure of Normandy was far from the end of the operation. The rest of the job required a huge force to chase the German army back to Germany. The force would require that many allied soldiers put themselves in harm's way. One of those soldiers was Walter Babcock of Springfield, South Dakota.
After spending some time at the University of South Dakota, including taking part in the ROTC program, Walter enlisted in the army at Fort Crook, Nebraska on September 22, 1943. He was trained as an infantryman at Camp Fannin in Texas. After his training, on April 7, 1944, he was shipped to England and the European theater of operations. In England, he joined a huge collection of soldiers and received further training preparing him for the invasion of the mainland. Walter sat out the Invasion of Normandy, but joined the legendary First Infantry Division (Big Red One) as a replacement a week later. Day 1 of the Invasion (D-Day) has received the majority of the attention over the years. Lost in all of the attention of day one was the intense combat required after D-Day to push the Germans back and establish a beachhead for the allies to operate from. Walter took part in the heavy battles to expand the Normandy beach heads and was wounded on August 9, 1944, taking him out of action.
While Walter recuperated, his division raced across France chasing the German army in a path through Mortain, to the Seine and then on to Soissons across the Alone River to Maubeuge, Charlero, Liege and Herve in Belgium. The resistance was light until they neared the German border where German resistance stiffened dramatically. At this point, Walter rejoined the battle on September 3.
During the first three days of Walter's return, Walter's division inflicted one of the costliest single defeats on the enemy in the Franco-Belgian campaign. In one five-hour period of fighting, Walter's company killed or wounded 200 Germans, and captured 400 prisoners and much equipment. During the three days of fighting, the action was so intense and chaotic that there were no front lines. When the smoke had cleared, the defeat for the enemy was complete and The Big Red One and Walter moved on to the next objective.
The resistance was unexpectedly light as the First Division moved on to Aachen, a German border city incorporated into the Siegfried Line and a key German obstacle in the Allies goal of occupying the Ruhr industrial heartland. As they neared Aachen, resistance increased significantly. In Aachen, the fighting was bitter and moved to the south of the city where the Germans had concentrated their efforts. Walter's 18th regiment seized 19 pillboxes in one action. The fighting centered on the American attempt to take Crucifix Hill and resorted to hand to hand fighting as Walter's 18th regiment fought and absorbed attack after attack from German tanks, artillery, and infantry. The Americans fought off counterattacks and other desperate attempts by the Germans to change the momentum. As the Germans made their last efforts to defeat the Americans on October 19, Private Walter Babcock was tragically KIA in the desperate and ferocious fighting that took place to take Crucifix Hill. Two days later, Colonel Gerhard M. Wick, Wehrmacht commanding officer, surrendered unconditionally. Aachen was devastated with burst sewers, broken gas mains, bloated dead animals, shattered glass, dangling power lines and with no buildings remaining intact. It was the first city on German soil to be captured by the Allies and was the largest urban battle fought by US forces in WW II.
Memorial services were held for Walter Babcock on November 3, 1944 at the Springfield Congregational Church. He is buried in Europe at Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery at Plot C, Row 6, Grave 41. Private Walter E. Babcock was awarded the American Campaign Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the WWII Victory Medal and two Purple Hearts. Walter's death was a huge loss for Walter's family and the town of Springfield. Many relatives and friends would only know Walter by his military picture, which was a picture of an engaging full of life confidant young man.

Obituary:
Larry D. Holter, 77, of Miller and formerly of Highmore, passed away Wednesday, December 30, 2020 at the Good Samaritan Society in Miller.
Private graveside service at the Platte Cemetery in Platte, will be held at a later date.
Larry was born in Mitchell, SD, on October 17, 1943 to L. Harley Holter and Inez (Ells) Holter of Platte, SD. Larry lived on the farm southwest of Platte and grew up with his sister and two brothers. He attended country school and Platte High School.
Larry joined a combining crew for two years, traveling through South Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma.
In the spring of 1963, Larry moved to Holabird, SD and worked many years on the farm with his parents. Larry also worked for numerous farmers and ranchers around the Holabird/Highmore area throughout the years.
In 2000, Larry moved to Highmore, SD and worked for Hyde County Extension Service for several years. He worked to help plant shelter belts in the Hyde County area.
Larry was a member of the Senior Citizens Center and Our Savior Lutheran Church in Highmore.
Those thankful for sharing his life are his sister, Glynda (Darrold) Hay; brothers, Edwin (Dorothy) Holter and Francis (Janice) Holter; nine nieces and nephews; aunt, Adele Holter of Platte, SD; and uncle, Wayne Ells of Webster, SD.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents: L. Harley and Inez Holter; and grandparents: Edward and Ella (Bakken) Holter and Edwin and Carrie (Stowe) Ells.
