In 1850 John Hornby Maw, together with his sons George and Arthur, purchased the ailing, ceramic tile making business of the Worcester Porcelain Company.
The business was moved to Benthall, in the Iron Bridge Gorge in Shropshire, in 1852 and then again to a purpose built factory in Jackfield, Ironbridge, in the 1880's. By this time Maw and Company had become the world's largest producer of tiles and architectural ceramics selling more than 20 million pieces world-wide. In the late 1960's Maw and Company was acquired by H & R Johnson Tiles Ltd, of Stoke-on-Trent

I did notice the Maw family references too - you may not be aware that GEORGE MAW (1832-1912) also had a heather named after him (Erica ciliaris 'Mawiana') as well as quite a few other plants [he was an enthusiaistic amateru botanist - I see him described as a taxonomist on your tree which is certainly not his profession, even if it was his avocation in his spare time. But he was also an artist, praised by John Ruskin, no less.
Looks as if there is a streak of botany and horticulture in your family tree!
If you wanted I could scan his portrait and his heather for you.

Sculptor R.A., born in Keswick, Cumberland, in England's Lake District. He studied in Germany and returned to London in 1887 to work under Edouard Lanteri and Sir Thomas Brock; he taught at the Glasgow School of Art from 1897 through to 1905 and was professor of sculpture at the Royal College of Art from 1918 through to 1923. He was elected to the Royal Academy in 1920. He produced a good deal of architectural sculpture typical of the time, including four large roof figures for the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow, the British Linen Bank also in Glasgow, and the Britannic House in London for architect Sir Edwin Lutyens. Freestanding sculptures by him may also be seen in various galleries, such as his 1907 Atalanta (Manchester Art Gallery, with a bronze cast of it now in Chelsea Embankment Gardens. When he was too old (at 41) to enlist in the Army at the onset of World War I, Wood volunteered in the hospital wards and his exposure to the gruesome injuries inflicted by the new war's weapons eventually led him to open a special clinic: the Masks for Facial Disfigurement Department, located in the Third London General Hospital, Wandsworth. Instead of the rubber masks used conventionally, Wood constructed masks of thin metal, sculpted to match the portraits of the men in their pre-war normality, as did Mrs. Anna Coleman Ladd, of Pennsylvania, at a similar Paris clinic.

Derwent Wood died on the 19th February 1926 after having undergone a serious operation. He had lung cancer. He was 54 years of age. He is buried in Amberley in Sussex and over his grave in St Michael's Church churchyard is a bronze "Pieta". It is dated 1909 and was originally carved for All Saints Church in Ennismore Gardens. The grave is that of Derwent Wood and his wife

According to the Memorial of Herbert Campbell Maw, He Died on 14th May 1906 having been killed while serving with the Natal Forces in the Zulu Rebellion. Winning a 'Prize Scholarship' to the RAF College at Cranwell in 1927, which he represented at Fencing and Athletics. He was awarded the Humanities Prize on graduation in 1929, being posted to No 33 Sqn at Eastchurch. Initially flying Hawker Horsleys, it was not long before the squadron became the first to be equipped with the new Hawker Hart. Whilst serving with 33, he qualified as both a photographic and parachute officer to the squadron. His first overseas posting came in ?, when he joined No 39 Squadron at Risalpur in India, also flying the Hart.
Returning to the operational environment, he joined No 66 Squadron at Duxford, this time flying Gloster Gauntlets. In 1937 he led the squadron formation aerobatic team at the Coronation display at Hendon. Shortly after this in 1938 he was posted overseas again, this time to Egypt.
In 1938 he was offered the post of British Liaison Officer to the French in Beirut, being qualified as a French interpreter. However shortly after this he passed the Staff College examination but his request to carry out this duty for two years before attending the RAF Staff College was rejected, for which he was later grateful.
With the outbreak of war imminent he, along with the other members of the course were posted to study their war appointments. In his case this was to RAF Catterick where he trained to be a fighter sector controller. Returning to Andover and completion of his staff course, after which he joined HMS Glasgow for a pre leave attachment. Shortly prior to the outbreak of war, he found that he was not to become a fighter controller after all, instead of which he was posted to the Air Ministry and an appointment in the Directorate of Plans. However, on arrival he met Paddy Bandon (later ACM The Earl of Bandon), who told him that he (Bandon) had been appointed to the Supreme War Council as a Staff Officer. Being unable to speak French, Bandon asked Vintras if he would like to 'swap' jobs and so Roland Vintras became staff officer to AVM Sir Douglas Evill.
One of his duties was to organize an air service between Hendon and France for members of the Allied Military Committee and others involved in negotiations and planning with the French authorities. Following the fall of France, he joined the Joint Planning Committee under Group Capt William Dickson. He immediately became involved in negotiations with Britain's oldest ally, Portugal. As a result he found himself Acting as a liaison officer to the Portuguese representative who had carried out a survey of the Azores as a possible base for long range anti submarine aircraft. These negotiations becoming extremely detailed and drawn out and requiring him traveling to Portugal on a number of occasions. Ultimately however, the negotiations paid dividends when the Portuguese agreed to allow the Allies to use facilities in the Azores resulting in the establishment of No 247 Group. Operating 'Very Long Range' Fortresses and Liberators, the Group was able to close what had become known as the 'Atlantic Gap'. As secretary of the Committee he also attended the Conferences at Casablanca, Algiers and Washington in 1943.
Returning to England, he was appointed Base/Station Commander of RAF ? in Lincolnshire, part of No 5 Group, but it was not long before he was asked to accompany yet another mission to Portugal. However, prior to leaving it was suggested by AVM F F Inglis that he would be ideally suited to the vacant post of Director of Intelligence (Research). Having completed his mission to Portugal, he returned to London and was shortly afterwards promoted to Air Commodore and installed as DoI(R). He later became the Director of Intelligence and after the war he served in the Joint Intelligence Bureau of the Ministry of Defence until he retired for personal reasons.

Maw, William Sidney
MAW _ William Sidney It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden
death of our beloved Bill on Christmas Day 2005 in Vancouver, BC. He was
born on November 17th, 1936 to Margaret and Arthur Maw in Calgary, AB, where
he grew up. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered as Willie by
his wife Janet and her children, as Pop by his daughter Caroline and son
Michael, as Papie by his granddaughters Catherine and Jessica, and as Bill
by his sister Mary (Stuart) and their children, other family and many dear
friends. There will be a service to celebrate his life at St. John's
Shaughnessy Anglican Church on Tuesday, January 3rd, 2006 at 4:00 pm. In
lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in
Bill's memory ( www.heartandstroke.bc.ca )
