SAMUEL BROCK, a leading and influential resident of Clifton, owns and operates a farm of two hundred acres, although he makes his home in the village. He has lived in this county for a period of twenty-two years, and his residence in this State dates from 1854. His life record is as follows. His birth occurred on the 7th of December, 1824, in Epworth, Lincolnshire, England. He is the son of William and Catherine (Standring) Brock. Their family numbered seven children, three sons and four daughters. Five of these are now living, the two eldest ones of the family having died in England. Those surviving are Judith, Ann, Samuel, Hannah and John T. Three of the children have located in America. Ann crossed the Atlantic in 1852, and two years later was followed by her brothers, Samuel and John. They settled in Will County, Ill., the brothers working on a farm near Plainfield.



He whose name heads this sketch received a good common school education, and upon arriving at man's estate was united in marriage with Miss Sarah Christina Brock, daughter of William and Elizabeth (Maudson) Brock. The two families, though bearing the same name, were not related. Mr. and Mrs. Brock became the parents of seven children, six of them being sons: William F. was born June 12, 1855, and married Miss Sarah Simrel, of Clifton, by whom he has one child, Edgar. He is a farmer by occupation, and operates a tract of lard three miles from Clifton. George M., who was born April 22, 1857, married Miss Harriet Leggott, who is the daughter of Edward and Ann (Platt) Leggott. They are the parents of three children, Arthur, Grace and Carrie, and make their home in Clifton. Charles C. was born on the 11th of November, 1859. Alfred L., born April 10, 1861, wedded Miss Anna Carron, and makes his home in Clifton. The lady is the daughter of Alfonso Carron. Richard H., born May 9, 1863, married Miss Mary Louise Vandervort, and they too reside in Clifton. One child, Chauncey, graces their union. Edith E., whose birth occurred on the 17th of March, 1869, still resides under the parental roof. Edgar T., born December 14, 1870, died on the 12th of April, 1879.



Mr. Brock engaged in agricultural pursuits for a period of about sixteen years in Will County, and then changed his place of residence. It was in 1870 that he removed with his family to Iroquois County. He settled upon a farm comprising eighty acres, which was situated three miles to the northwest of Clifton, and thereon made his home for eighteen years. In March, 1888, he came to the village, but has not abandoned his farming interests, still operating his farm, which comprises within its boundaries two hundred acres. He is a good farmer, progressive and practical, and the neat appearance of the place indicates his industrious nature. On every hand can be seen the evidences of the enterprise and supervision of the owner, and his farm is a model one. He has overcome all obstacles placed in his pathway in a manner worthy of emulation, and well deserves the success which he has achieved. Mr. Brock exercises his right of franchise in favor of the Republican party, and is a loyal citizen of his adopted country.

Samuel married Brock, Sarah Christina on 21 May 1854. GONE TO REST



Mrs. Hannah Moody, wife of George Moody, died at her home in this place Jan. 29, 1897, aged 69 years and three months.



The deceased was among the early settlers of this section. She was born at Epworth, England, Oct. 29, 1827. Nov. 23, 1838, she married George Moody, and four years later they emigrated to America making their first home in this country at Plainfield, Will Co., Ill. A few years later, they became residents of this section, where they have since remained. To the union ten children were born, five sons and five daughters, of whom the following are now living:



George Moody, Mrs. Catherine Found and Mrs. Hannah Leggott, of this place, John Moody, of Kankakee, William Moody, of Elwood, Neb., and Mrs. Mary Carter of Arapahoe, Neb.



The funeral services were held at the M. E. church, of which the deceased was a member. Rev. R. H. Fairburn, officiating. The remains were laid to rest in the Clifton cemetery.

The third window is to the right of the alter and reads:
To the glory of God and in memory of Arthur Maw of this parish and Manchester, youngest son of the late Edmund and Sarah Maw borne 14th December 1833 died 8th April 1904. Also of Sarah Ann wife of the above Arthur Maw born 30th November 1833 and died 4th September 1897. This window was given by their daughter Henrietta Louisa Maw 1910.

GEORGE M. BROCK, a prominent citizen and business man of Clifton, was born in Plainfield, Will County, Ill., on the 22d of April, 1857. He is a son of Samuel and Sarah (Brock) Brock, both of whom claim England as the land of their nativity. They set sail for America immediately after their marriage, at length landing safely in this country. Though both bearing the same name, they were in no wise related. The father of Mrs. Brock was a finely educated man, and served as clerk to a celebrated lawyer in England. He also contributed many articles to the papers and leading periodicals of that country.



The subject of this sketch received the advantages of a good common school education, and was reared to manhood upon his father's farm in the usual manner of farmer lads. He embarked in business for himself at the age of twenty four years, following agricultural pursuits upon a farm three miles northwest of Clifton. He remained upon the farm until 1888, when he removed to Clifton, purchasing the livery barn and business of his brother, Charles C. Brock, and entering into partnership with his brother Alfred L. After doing business together for a period of about four years, he purchased his partner's interest, and is now the sole proprietor. He has a large and lucrative business, and has in all respects a well appointed and equipped livery.



On the 31st of October, 1881, occurred the marriage of Mr. Brook and Miss Harriet Leggott, who is the daughter of Edward and Ann (Platt) Leggott, of Clifton. By the union of the young couple have been born three children: Arthur, Grace and Carrie. At this writing, in the fall of 1892, Mr. Brock is a member of the Village Board of Trustees, and is always active in his efforts to promote the prosperity and welfare of the community.

CHARLES C. BROCK



Charles C. Brock is a general farmer, devoting his time and energies to the cultivation of two hundred acres of land on sections 32 and 33, Chebanse township, and in addition to tilling the fields he makes a specialty of the raising of Poland China hogs. He is a son of Samuel and Sarah (Brock) Brock, who came from England to the United States in 1854 and settled at Plainfield, Will county, Illinois, where they remained until 1870. In that year they came to Chebanse township, Iroquois county, and followed farming until 1889, the father giving his attention to general agricultural pursuits until he put aside business cares altogether. He is now living retired in Clifton. The family numbered six children, of whom Charles C. is the third in order of birth, the record being as follows: William F., a resident of Clifton; George M., who is mayor of Clifton and also deputy sheriff of the county; Charles C.; Alfred S.; Richard H.; and Edith, the wife of Charles Trimble, who is principal of the schools at Clifton.



The birth of Charles C. Brock occurred in Plainfield, Will county, Illinois, on the 11th of November, 1859, and at the usual age he entered the public schools, where he acquired his education. He was reared to the occupation of farming and throughout almost his entire life has followed that pursuit. At one time he engaged quite extensively in shipping stock but in more recent years has given up that business and now devotes his undivided attention to the operation of the farm, which he has brought under a high state of cultivation, so that he annually gathers therefrom rich and abundant harvests. He is practical in his methods, systematic in all that he does and displays an aptitude for successful management that is manifest in the prosperity that has attended him. Aside from the tilling of the soil he now makes a specialty of the raising of Poland China hogs.



Mr. Brock was happily married on the 10th of February, 1903, at Clifton, the lady of his choice being Miss Adda E. Bosley, and unto them has been born a daughter, Edith E. Mr. Brock is recognized as a stalwart advocate of republican principles and in 1892 he served as marshal of Clifton. He attends and supports several different local churches and is interested in general improvement and upbuilding of the county along material, intellectual, political and moral lines. The spirit of enterprise which has been the dominant factor in the upbuilding of the middle west is manifest in his life and has made him a substantial and representative farmer of Chebanse township.

Mrs. Thomas G. Carter, an old and respected pioneer woman of Frontier county, died at her home in Arapahoe last Thursday morning, after a long and painful illness, cancer being the cause of death. She had lived in Arapahoe about three years, retiring from the farm with her husband to spend her last years in comfort, but her hopes were short lived, as she has been an invalid ever since coming to town, and her trouble dates even before that time.



Funeral services were held from the Arapahoe Methodist church Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, in the presence of nearly seventy immediate relatives and a following of sorrowing friends who overran the capacity of the commodious church. The profusion of flowers attested the esteem in which deceased was held in the community. Rev. Carr, of Lexington, a former pastor of Mrs. Carter, conducted the services, assisted by Rev. Pinckney. A special choir sang appropriate hymns. The singers were, Mrs. Mae Carter, Mrs. M. A. Clark, Chas. M. Evans and Clyde Prime, accompanied by Miss Madge Disbrow at the organ.



The body was borne to the grave by loving and tender hands, the six sons acting as pall bearers. They are John, Charles, Frank, William, Edward and Fred. The ladies of Lincoln Circle, auxiliary to the G. A. R., rendered an impressive ritualistic service at Arapahoe cemetery where the remains were interred.



Mary Moody was born in Belton, England, Aug. 31, 1849. Died Oct. 16, 1913. Age 64 years, 1 month, 16 days. She came to America with her parents at the age of three years and settled at Plainfield, Ills. A few years later they moved to Iroquois county, Ills., where she lived until she was married to Thomas G. Carter, Feb. 8, 1871. To this union was born ten children, seven sons and three daughters, all living near Arapahoe except one son, George, who died nine years ago. The spring of 1884, they moved to Frontier county, Nebr., where they have lived until two years ago when they moved to Arapahoe.



She had been a faithful and consistent member of the M. E. church at Gosper about seventeen years, also a member of Grand Army Circle. She was a kind and loving mother, and will be missed by all who knew her. She leaves to mourn her loss, a husband, nine children all at her bedside at the time of her death, two sisters, three brothers and 21 grand-children.

John Moody had three wives and two children. A daughter, Lillian "Lilly" Moody, born in 1884, was left motherless when Alice Found Moody died in 1887. A son, George John Moody, born in 1894, also lost his mother, Mary Fischer Moody, when she passed away in 1904.

"The Clifton Advocate" [Clifton, Iroquois Co., IL], Thursday, 6 Nov. 1919, p. 1:

John Moody of Kankakee died Tuesday morning, Nov. 4, 1919, following a brief illness. For several weeks past he had been taking treatments for heart disease. His only son, George Moody, was murdered in Atlanta, Ga., last July and the trial of his slayer was set for Nov. 7. Mr. Moody was summoned to attend the trial but his health had been so poor that he could not go there and the fact seemed to be giving him considerable worry during the past few days.

Mr. Moody was born at Plainfield, Illinois, Nov. 8, 1859. When a boy he moved with his parents to a farm near Clifton, where he lived during his youth. He moved to Kankakee 31 years ago and was engaged in the implement business. Later he became a traveling salesman for the J. I. Case Thresher Co., and he maintained that position until a year ago when he retired.

He was married twice [sic, thrice]. Two children were born of the first union [sic, first and second]; the daughter is Mrs. Lillie Stetsenbaugh [sic] of Chesterton, Ind; and the son George died last July. Mr. Moody married Clara Travis in 1908, and she survives him. He also leaves a brother, George of Momence, and two sisters, Mrs. Alfred Found of Clifton and Mrs. Oliver Leggott of Kankakee.

He was a member of the Methodist church and the Masonic Lodge.

The funeral and burial services were held in Kankakee Thursday.
