Correspondence with the Spectacle Makers Company

Dear Andrew Maw. Your email of the 10th September has been passed onto me as the Honorary Archivist of the Spectacle Makers Company. There are 5 members of the Maw family on our records. The first is Solomon Maw of 11, Aldersgate Street, London. His occupation is stated as "Surgical Instrument Maker". He became a Freeman of the Company 7/12/1843 and a Liveryman 2/5/1849. He died in 1861. He was the son of George Maw late of Peckham, Surrey, who was a Merchant by trade. The second is Charles Maw, also of 11, Aldersgate Street, London and also a Surgical Instrument Maker. Both Solomon and Charles became members of the Company by "Redemption" i.e. they paid for it. Charles is Solmon's son. Charles became Free of the Company and a Liveryman on the same day, not unusual at that time, 2/10/1856. It was Solomon who started the family connection with the Spectacle Makers Company. The next two, Charles Trentham Maw and Henry Trentham Maw, are the sons of Charles and became Freemen by "Servitude" i.e. their father was a Freeman of the Company at the time of their birth. Charles Trentham Maw was a Surgical Instrument Maker of 7/12, Aldersgate Street, London. He became Free of the Company and a Liveryman 15/5/1885. Henry Trentham Maw also of 7/12 Aldersgate Street, is shown as a Surgeon. He became Free and a Liveryman 8/9/1897. Finally comes Partrick Charles Maw grandson of Charles and son of Henry Trentham. He obtained his Freedom and Livery 6/2/1923 by Patrimony as the son of Henry Trentham. He is shown as a Druggist of 7/12, Aldersgate Street. There is no indication in the records of the date of birth of any of these 5 and the death of only one. You may already know of the Livery Company set-up. In case you don't a Freeman is the basic "member" of a Livery Company. The next step for those particularly interested is to become a Liveryman. To become a Freeman or a Liveryman would require the sponsorship of existing members of the Company. Of the three ways of becoming Free of a Company Freedom and Redemption I have already mentioned. The third way was by Servitude by virtue of an apprenticeship with an existing Freeman or Liveryman of the Company. I hope this information will add a little to your tracing of your family history. Biography:
The Sons of Maw,
The name MAW has been associated with a whole range of British made chemist's sundries, dressings, surgical appliances and instruments, for nearly 200 years. Whilst it is more than likely that it is the older generation of pharmacists who best remember Maw, as their strictly "Chemists Only" products and their range of dressings and bandages were stocked by practically every community pharmacy.0 Unfortunately importation problems and increased competition have seen them disappear from Pharmacy shelves in Australia.
Today Maw products are now invisible in the UK as well, and the Maw name on all packaging has been re-branded as Tommee Tippee. This is another corporate name used by the Mayborn group of companies, for the US market, where Maw had won many awards for their innovative baby products which combined infant safety with function and style.
Apart from their huge pharmaceutical manufacturing and distribution business, the Maw family was also associated with the manufacture of decorative tiles for walls and floors. A well known example of this craft are the floor and wall tiles in St.Paul's Anglican Cathedral in Melbourne.
Our story starts in 1807 when a Lincolnshire farmer, George Maw decided to start a new life in London with his wife Ann and their (then) three children. George established a wholesale druggist business in London with his wife's cousin named Hornby. In 1814 he parted from Mr Hornby and set up a pharmaceutical manufacturing business by purchasing a surgical plaster factory. Other sundries were soon added including surgeons' instruments.

When their eldest son, John Hornby Maw turned 15, his father placed him with a chemist at Croydon for two years and afterwards entered him at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London in order to get first hand knowledge which might benefit the family business. In 1826 J H Maw was taken into partnership with his father.
As well as being an instrument maker, George Maw is attributed with being the inventor of baby feeding teats, which revolutionised the infant care industry by adapting a baby's natural feeding process to create the world's first feeding teat.. (2) The Maw Company also manufactured feeding bottles of many different patent designs. One of the most successful of their early products was the Maws Fountain feeding bottle, which had a teat attached to a rubber tube which was connected to the bottle by a non return valve to prevent the milk draining back into the bottle. (3)
The family business prospered and in the early 1830s provided a secure financial basis for John Hornby Maw to begin to indulge in the collection of paintings. In 1835 he retired from the business for health reasons but its considerable commercial success continued throughout the nineteenth century under his brother Solomon and nephew Charles. In 1849 the family moved to Devon for a few months and it was here that an interest in decorative tile making was aroused. It struck him that it would not be difficult to imitate ancient encaustic tiles by using inlaid clays in the medieval fashion. Designs were traced in local churches and the prototypes were fired by a local potter.
J H Maw saw 'the germ of the business for his boys for which he had been searching and in 1850 a disused tile works was purchased at Worcester, and for two years floor tiles were made there. In 1852 the family, their workforce and equipment moved (by special train!) to Benthall in the Ironbridge Gorge, Shropshire, to be closer to sources of coal and suitable clay. The family firm grew rapidly over the next decade, the demand for decorative floor tiles being fuelled by the building and restoration of churches and grand civic buildings. Wall tiling and glazed architectural faience was added to the product range and designs were commissioned from leading architects. A considerable quantity of tiles were exported to the countries of the British Empire and to the United States. By the 1880s Maws manufacturing site at Benthall had become too restricted and land was purchased at Jackfield, a mile downstream on the River Severn where a new Benthall Works was erected and opened on 1 May 1883.

John Hornby Maw's achievements fall into three distinct phases. His entrepreneurial flair was first demonstrated during his early years in London in the family manufacturing chemists business. The last 33 years of his life in Shropshire, saw his business flair linked to successful artistic manufacture - the epitome of a Victorian art industry. He saw decorative tile making develop from a few crude, handmade prototypes in 1849 to the opening of the largest decorative tile works in the world in 1883.
Meanwhile, the mainstream branch of the family kept expanding the medical side of the Maw business, which survived the disruptions and devastation of two world wars. It was not until 1970 that the last Maw descendent retired and the old firm was absorbed into one of the multi national companies that dominate the market today.

The following article by Susan Watts., provides a complete picture of the progress of the MAW business from 1807 until the present day, and should be useful to the collector who needs a reliable reference for determining the age of an artefact.

Correspondence with the Spectacle Makers Company

Dear Andrew Maw. Your email of the 10th September has been passed onto me as the Honorary Archivist of the Spectacle Makers Company. There are 5 members of the Maw family on our records. The first is Solomon Maw of 11, Aldersgate Street, London. His occupation is stated as "Surgical Instrument Maker". He became a Freeman of the Company 7/12/1843 and a Liveryman 2/5/1849. He died in 1861. He was the son of George Maw late of Peckham, Surrey, who was a Merchant by trade. The second is Charles Maw, also of 11, Aldersgate Street, London and also a Surgical Instrument Maker. Both Solomon and Charles became members of the Company by "Redemption" i.e. they paid for it. Charles is Solmon's son. Charles became Free of the Company and a Liveryman on the same day, not unusual at that time, 2/10/1856. It was Solomon who started the family connection with the Spectacle Makers Company. The next two, Charles Trentham Maw and Henry Trentham Maw, are the sons of Charles and became Freemen by "Servitude" i.e. their father was a Freeman of the Company at the time of their birth. Charles Trentham Maw was a Surgical Instrument Maker of 7/12, Aldersgate Street, London. He became Free of the Company and a Liveryman 15/5/1885. Henry Trentham Maw also of 7/12 Aldersgate Street, is shown as a Surgeon. He became Free and a Liveryman 8/9/1897. Finally comes Partrick Charles Maw grandson of Charles and son of Henry Trentham. He obtained his Freedom and Livery 6/2/1923 by Patrimony as the son of Henry Trentham. He is shown as a Druggist of 7/12, Aldersgate Street. There is no indication in the records of the date of birth of any of these 5 and the death of only one. You may already know of the Livery Company set-up. In case you don't a Freeman is the basic "member" of a Livery Company. The next step for those particularly interested is to become a Liveryman. To become a Freeman or a Liveryman would require the sponsorship of existing members of the Company. Of the three ways of becoming Free of a Company Freedom and Redemption I have already mentioned. The third way was by Servitude by virtue of an apprenticeship with an existing Freeman or Liveryman of the Company. I hope this information will add a little to your tracing of your family history. Dear Johan
I did notice the Maw family references too - you may not be aware that GEORGE MAW (1832-1912) also had a heather named after him (Erica ciliaris 'Mawiana') as well as quite a few other plants [he was an enthusiaistic amateru botanist - I see him described as a taxonomist on your tree which is certainly not his profession, even if it was his avocation in his spare time. But he was also an artist, praised by John Ruskin, no less.
Looks as if there is a streak of botany and horticulture in your family tree!
If you wanted I could scan his portrait and his heather for you.

On the Doncasters, yes you could attach the email.
This, by the way, is Samuel's signature (I don't have his portrait) from a copy of the Backhouses' heather catalogue (1911) in which the heather was named after his wife.

Correspondence with the Spectacle Makers Company

Dear Andrew Maw. Your email of the 10th September has been passed onto me as the Honorary Archivist of the Spectacle Makers Company. There are 5 members of the Maw family on our records. The first is Solomon Maw of 11, Aldersgate Street, London. His occupation is stated as "Surgical Instrument Maker". He became a Freeman of the Company 7/12/1843 and a Liveryman 2/5/1849. He died in 1861. He was the son of George Maw late of Peckham, Surrey, who was a Merchant by trade. The second is Charles Maw, also of 11, Aldersgate Street, London and also a Surgical Instrument Maker. Both Solomon and Charles became members of the Company by "Redemption" i.e. they paid for it. Charles is Solmon's son. Charles became Free of the Company and a Liveryman on the same day, not unusual at that time, 2/10/1856. It was Solomon who started the family connection with the Spectacle Makers Company. The next two, Charles Trentham Maw and Henry Trentham Maw, are the sons of Charles and became Freemen by "Servitude" i.e. their father was a Freeman of the Company at the time of their birth. Charles Trentham Maw was a Surgical Instrument Maker of 7/12, Aldersgate Street, London. He became Free of the Company and a Liveryman 15/5/1885. Henry Trentham Maw also of 7/12 Aldersgate Street, is shown as a Surgeon. He became Free and a Liveryman 8/9/1897. Finally comes Partrick Charles Maw grandson of Charles and son of Henry Trentham. He obtained his Freedom and Livery 6/2/1923 by Patrimony as the son of Henry Trentham. He is shown as a Druggist of 7/12, Aldersgate Street. There is no indication in the records of the date of birth of any of these 5 and the death of only one. You may already know of the Livery Company set-up. In case you don't a Freeman is the basic "member" of a Livery Company. The next step for those particularly interested is to become a Liveryman. To become a Freeman or a Liveryman would require the sponsorship of existing members of the Company. Of the three ways of becoming Free of a Company Freedom and Redemption I have already mentioned. The third way was by Servitude by virtue of an apprenticeship with an existing Freeman or Liveryman of the Company. I hope this information will add a little to your tracing of your family history. Sculptor R.A., born in Keswick, Cumberland, in England's Lake District. He studied in Germany and returned to London in 1887 to work under Edouard Lanteri and Sir Thomas Brock; he taught at the Glasgow School of Art from 1897 through to 1905 and was professor of sculpture at the Royal College of Art from 1918 through to 1923. He was elected to the Royal Academy in 1920. He produced a good deal of architectural sculpture typical of the time, including four large roof figures for the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow, the British Linen Bank also in Glasgow, and the Britannic House in London for architect Sir Edwin Lutyens. Freestanding sculptures by him may also be seen in various galleries, such as his 1907 Atalanta (Manchester Art Gallery, with a bronze cast of it now in Chelsea Embankment Gardens. When he was too old (at 41) to enlist in the Army at the onset of World War I, Wood volunteered in the hospital wards and his exposure to the gruesome injuries inflicted by the new war's weapons eventually led him to open a special clinic: the Masks for Facial Disfigurement Department, located in the Third London General Hospital, Wandsworth. Instead of the rubber masks used conventionally, Wood constructed masks of thin metal, sculpted to match the portraits of the men in their pre-war normality, as did Mrs. Anna Coleman Ladd, of Pennsylvania, at a similar Paris clinic.

Derwent Wood died on the 19th February 1926 after having undergone a serious operation. He had lung cancer. He was 54 years of age. He is buried in Amberley in Sussex and over his grave in St Michael's Church churchyard is a bronze "Pieta". It is dated 1909 and was originally carved for All Saints Church in Ennismore Gardens. The grave is that of Derwent Wood and his wife

According to the Memorial of Herbert Campbell Maw, He Died on 14th May 1906 having been killed while serving with the Natal Forces in the Zulu Rebellion. Correspondence with the Spectacle Makers Company

Dear Andrew Maw. Your email of the 10th September has been passed onto me as the Honorary Archivist of the Spectacle Makers Company. There are 5 members of the Maw family on our records. The first is Solomon Maw of 11, Aldersgate Street, London. His occupation is stated as "Surgical Instrument Maker". He became a Freeman of the Company 7/12/1843 and a Liveryman 2/5/1849. He died in 1861. He was the son of George Maw late of Peckham, Surrey, who was a Merchant by trade. The second is Charles Maw, also of 11, Aldersgate Street, London and also a Surgical Instrument Maker. Both Solomon and Charles became members of the Company by "Redemption" i.e. they paid for it. Charles is Solmon's son. Charles became Free of the Company and a Liveryman on the same day, not unusual at that time, 2/10/1856. It was Solomon who started the family connection with the Spectacle Makers Company. The next two, Charles Trentham Maw and Henry Trentham Maw, are the sons of Charles and became Freemen by "Servitude" i.e. their father was a Freeman of the Company at the time of their birth. Charles Trentham Maw was a Surgical Instrument Maker of 7/12, Aldersgate Street, London. He became Free of the Company and a Liveryman 15/5/1885. Henry Trentham Maw also of 7/12 Aldersgate Street, is shown as a Surgeon. He became Free and a Liveryman 8/9/1897. Finally comes Partrick Charles Maw grandson of Charles and son of Henry Trentham. He obtained his Freedom and Livery 6/2/1923 by Patrimony as the son of Henry Trentham. He is shown as a Druggist of 7/12, Aldersgate Street. There is no indication in the records of the date of birth of any of these 5 and the death of only one. You may already know of the Livery Company set-up. In case you don't a Freeman is the basic "member" of a Livery Company. The next step for those particularly interested is to become a Liveryman. To become a Freeman or a Liveryman would require the sponsorship of existing members of the Company. Of the three ways of becoming Free of a Company Freedom and Redemption I have already mentioned. The third way was by Servitude by virtue of an apprenticeship with an existing Freeman or Liveryman of the Company. I hope this information will add a little to your tracing of your family history. Correspondence with the Spectacle Makers Company

Dear Andrew Maw. Your email of the 10th September has been passed onto me as the Honorary Archivist of the Spectacle Makers Company. There are 5 members of the Maw family on our records. The first is Solomon Maw of 11, Aldersgate Street, London. His occupation is stated as "Surgical Instrument Maker". He became a Freeman of the Company 7/12/1843 and a Liveryman 2/5/1849. He died in 1861. He was the son of George Maw late of Peckham, Surrey, who was a Merchant by trade. The second is Charles Maw, also of 11, Aldersgate Street, London and also a Surgical Instrument Maker. Both Solomon and Charles became members of the Company by "Redemption" i.e. they paid for it. Charles is Solmon's son. Charles became Free of the Company and a Liveryman on the same day, not unusual at that time, 2/10/1856. It was Solomon who started the family connection with the Spectacle Makers Company. The next two, Charles Trentham Maw and Henry Trentham Maw, are the sons of Charles and became Freemen by "Servitude" i.e. their father was a Freeman of the Company at the time of their birth. Charles Trentham Maw was a Surgical Instrument Maker of 7/12, Aldersgate Street, London. He became Free of the Company and a Liveryman 15/5/1885. Henry Trentham Maw also of 7/12 Aldersgate Street, is shown as a Surgeon. He became Free and a Liveryman 8/9/1897. Finally comes Partrick Charles Maw grandson of Charles and son of Henry Trentham. He obtained his Freedom and Livery 6/2/1923 by Patrimony as the son of Henry Trentham. He is shown as a Druggist of 7/12, Aldersgate Street. There is no indication in the records of the date of birth of any of these 5 and the death of only one. You may already know of the Livery Company set-up. In case you don't a Freeman is the basic "member" of a Livery Company. The next step for those particularly interested is to become a Liveryman. To become a Freeman or a Liveryman would require the sponsorship of existing members of the Company. Of the three ways of becoming Free of a Company Freedom and Redemption I have already mentioned. The third way was by Servitude by virtue of an apprenticeship with an existing Freeman or Liveryman of the Company. I hope this information will add a little to your tracing of your family history.
