«b»Maw, Samuel Herbert
MAW, Samuel Herbert«/b» (1881-1952), a brilliant delineator, etcher, architect, cartographer and designer who was first active in England, and later in Toronto, then Halifax, then Montreal and finally in Toronto. Born in Needham Market, Co. Suffolk, England on 12 September 1881 he was educated at Ackworth School, but he does not appear to have obtained a formal university education in architecture. Instead, he articled with John S. Dorden in Ipswich (in 1899-1902), and then moved to London to continue his training with Edward W. Mountford, a leading Edwardian architect in London, in 1902-04. He was employed as a draftsman with Bradshaw & Gass, Bolton (in 1904-06), and by Sir William Gelder, Hull, Engl. in 1906-10. He won the prestigious Soane Medallion from the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1905, submitting a set of elaborate and meticulously rendered drawings for "A Royal Palace". In 1909 he exhibited his work at the Royal Academy in London, showing drawings for the Lancaster Town Hall, designed by Mountford & Clapham. One of these, a delicately drawn elevation for a substantial Organ Case in a public room at the Town Hall, appeared in Building News [London], xcvii, 2 July 1909, 13, with a double-page illustrated plate signed "S.H. Maw, delt." (A. Graves, Royal Academy Exhibitors 1905-1970, 1981, v, 192, Item 1511).
Maw then emigrated to the United States, and was briefly active in New York City in the firm of Brown & Maw before arriving in Toronto in late 1912. He joined the leading firm there, «b»Darling & Pearson«/b», and was immediately put to work by Frank Darling preparing elaborate watercolour perspective renderings of their commissions for the new Dominion Bank Headquarters in Toronto, and for other important projects by the firm including Trinity College, Toronto, and for the Art Gallery of Toronto. Maw also took the opportunity to collaborate with another employee in the firm, «b»Colin Drewitt«/b», to freelance and submit his own designs in competitions, which were always presented in breathtaking renderings from his own hand, for projects in Moose Jaw (1912) and in Ottawa (1914). He remained in Toronto until 1918, then moved to Halifax, N.S. to work as assistant to «b»Sidney Dumaresq«/b» until 1923. While there, he published his own design proposal for a new War Memorial Library & Art Gallery (Morning Chronicle [Halifax], 8 June 1923, 3, illus. & descrip.), but his design was never realised. Later that same year he moved to Montreal and worked in the office of «b»Philip Turner«/b» (in 1923-25) and later collaborated with him on the design of St. Phillip's Anglican Church in Montreal West, Que.
His reputation as an architectural delineator received considerable attention in London, Engl. in 1924 when his drawings were selected for display in the Canadian Pavilion at the British Empire Exhibition (Const., xvii, Dec. 1924, 389). In Montreal he worked for «b»Ross & Macdonald«/b» (1926-27), likely as a designer and delineator on the project for the Royal York Hotel in Toronto. By 1929 he was back in Toronto, and after his appointment as Head of the Architectural Department of the T. Eaton Co., he served as the juror for The Ideal Home Competition, sponsored by that department store, in 1930. He issued a lengthy report on the designs submitted (Const., xxiii, April 1930, 129-31; R.A.I.C. Journal, vii, April 1930, 139, 141). He remained on staff with the Interior Decorating Bureau at Eaton's until July 1938. During this period he collaborated on the design of the Toronto Stock Exchange, Bay Street (1937-1938), with «b»George & Moorhouse«/b».
In 1940 he accepted a position at McGill Univ., Montreal, where he gave classes in Architectural Rendering and Perspective (R.A.I.C. Journal, xvii, Nov. 1940, 204), but shortly after he moved to Ottawa to serve with the Dept. of National Defence in a civilian post during WWII. In 1946 he returned to Toronto, where he became a partner in the firm of «b»Govan, Ferguson, Lindsay, Kaminker, Maw, Langley & Keenleyside«/b», which specialized in the design and planning of hospitals. Virtually every perspective drawing illustrating their new hospital buildings came from the hand of Maw, who had a remarkable facility to draw in pencil, in charcoal, and in watercolour media.
Maw was also the author of a masterpiece of Canadian cartography, a bird's-eye view of Quebec City, begun in 1926 and completed in 1932, in which he accurately rendered every single building in the Old Town and surrounding area, complete with a hand-drawn cartouche and historical notes on the significance of the buildings shown. Published by the Alexander Litho Co. Ltd. of Toronto, this map, measuring 27" x 35", was reproduced in thousands of printed copies sold to tourists and visitors to Quebec for nearly three decades. A copy of the map can be found in National Map Collection, NAC, Ottawa. The popularity of this map led to another commission from the City of Ottawa, and Maw prepared a historical pictorial map of the Capital, unveiled at the National Gallery in Ottawa in 1944 (Evening Journal [Ottawa], 21 Oct. 1944). Maw died in Toronto on 19 August 1952 (obit. Globe & Mail [Toronto], 20 Aug. 1952, 5; Telegram [Toronto], 20 Aug. 1952, 24; R.A.I.C. Journal, xxix, Nov. 1952, 343; biog. LONDON, ENGLAND, The Tite Prize, 1909. This annual R.I.B.A. competition elicited 21 designs for "A Covered Arcade of Shops". The design by Maw, submitted under the pseudonym 'Dezzezero', was selected for the Third Prize of 10 Guineas (R.I.B.A. Journal [London], xvi, 23 Jan. 1909, 215; 6 Feb. 1909, 235, descrip.)
LONDON, ENGLAND, The Owen Jones Studentship, 1909. Maw was the sole competitor in this round, submitting his historical drawings of the Corsini Chapel in Rome, and the ceiling of the Scale d'Oro in Venice. The jury commented that 'his work is astonishing', and awarded him a prize of 20 Guineas for his effort (R.I.B.A. Journal [London], xvi, 23 Jan. 1909, 214; 6 Feb 1909, 233, descrip.)
MOOSE JAW, SASK., City Hall, 1912. The Toronto firm of Maw & Drewitt received Second Premium for their refined and formally composed Beaux-Arts scheme (Const., vi, Jan. 1913, 16, illus.). The commission was awarded to «b»John D. Atchison«/b» of Winnipeg, but his winning design was never built.
OTTAWA, ONT., Departmental Buildings, Wellington Street, 1914. The Toronto firm of Maw, Drewitt & Payne were one of sixty-two entrants in this major competition for the extension of government buildings located west of Parliament Hill (NAC, RG11, Vol. 2952, File 5370 - 1B, list of entrants). The project was cancelled by the federal government due to the outbreak of WWI.
MONTREAL, QUE. Maw received Third Prize in a competition for "Best Illustrated Advertisement" which featured his perspective drawing for the Crown Trust Building, Montreal (Const., xvii, Dec. 1924, 389, illus. & descrip; C.R., xxxviii, 10 Dec. 1924, 1216, descrip.). The competition was sponsored by the New York journal called The American Architect.
TORONTO, ONT., design for the cover of the monthly R.A.I.C. Journal. The first prize was awarded to Maw, and his proposal for the cover design appears in the R.A.I.C. Journal, v, Nov. 1927, 385 and 416-17, illus.

TORONTO, ONT., Trinity College, University of Toronto, Hoskin Avenue, designed by «b»Darling & Pearson«/b», 1914-25. A perspective for Founder's Quadrangle, signed by Maw, appeared in the R.A.I.C. Journal, ii, Nov.-Dec. 1925, 192, 195-204. A full set of eleven impressive watercolour drawings, all from the hand of Maw and dating from 1914, have survived and can be found in the Archives of Trinity College, Univ. of Toronto.

Maw prepared several birds-eye watercolour perspective drawings showing the alternative schemes for major expansion of the Art Gallery. ONCE UPON A TIME IN NORTH PARK

NEWMAN/I.O.O.F. BUILDING
The building now occupied by the Sunset Lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and two business establishments at University
Avenue and Kansas Street was designed in 1929 to house a department store. The building was planned by one of the pioneer
builders in North Park: Edward W. Newman. Mr. Newman and his wife Fanny lived in North Park as early as 1914. At the time of
construction of the I.O.O.F. building they were living at 3970 Kansas Street. During the 1920s, he maintained an office in the 3800
block of 30th Street. Edward Newman was also a builder of houses in University Heights, Normal Heights and Kensington as well as
North Park.
The building on the northeast corner of University and Kansas was planned in June of 1929 to be a four story building and
has a full basement with reinforced concrete and steel foundation to allow the load of such a structure. However, during construction,
plans were changed and the building turned out to be two stories with the second floor planned as a mezzanine around a central open
space. The Spanish Colonial exterior of the building featured a prominent series of round arch windows mimicking a glazed Roman
arcade. In the 1950s the translucent arches were covered in a mistaken effort at modernization.
Following completion of the building in December 1929, E.N. Mudd Department Store became the first tenant. In June of
the following year, the Norman F. Maw Music Company moved its store from downtown to the Newman Building. As well as musical
instruments, the Maw Company also stocked Frigidaire refrigerators and Brunswick radios. At the public opening of Norman
Maw's new store, representatives of the Frigidaire Company served frozen desserts "to illustrate the advantages of electrical refrigeration
in the home." Entertainment was offered by the thirty voices of the Treble Clef club, and the San Diego State College Men's
Glee Club. Several ukuleles and banjos were given away during the grand opening.
The business of those first two tenants of the Newman Building must have foundered during the darkest months of the Great
Depression as in September 1932, Edward Newman sold the building to the I.O.O.F. A remodeling project began immediately under
the direction of Lee Brendt, a Marine officer and member of the fraternity. The project resulted in lodge facilities facing on Kansas
Street and three business spaces on University. The first tenants after the 1933 remodeling included Smith Shade Company and
Siebert's Barber Shop.
Edward Newman also owned the four lots directly across Kansas Street now occupied by the North Park Rug and Carpet
Company building. In the summer of 1930, Newman leased those lots to James Truax who promptly laid out a "Midget Golf" course
on the property. With the Maw Music Company, and the new North Park Theatre and vaudeville house directly across the avenue
from the miniature golf course, the corner of Kansas and University became North Park's first center of entertainment for the local
community in the early 1930s.

Obituary:
Hugh Waring Maw

Hugh Maw was a birthright Friend, who was associated with our meeting at Stourbridge for over fifty years. He served the meeting in many different ways, as well as being very active at area meeting and yearly meeting levels. He was born in India to Quaker missionary parents and spent the first eight years of his life there. He recalled Mahatma Gandhi sometimes joining the family worship, sitting peacefully at the back spinning.
Another memory he would tell ruefully was the only time his father administered corporal punishment. A man-eating tiger had been seen in the area where they lived and, aged about seven, he crept out, determined to see it. This had been strictly forbidden by his parents. Luckily, he did not encounter the tiger!
He travelled back to England when he was eight to go to The Downs School and then Leighton Park, which is where his love of sports developed. He played hockey, rugby, loved gymnastics and became an outstanding cricketer. He readily admitted he had been very competitive.
He loved to recall the times when, during his undergraduate years at Bristol University, he danced in the chorus of Swan Lake with the International Ballet, with the professional dancers whispering instructions in his ear. Years later an elderly member of his meeting boasted that she had been in the audience and seen him!
For his postgraduate teaching practice, he went to Sidcot School, where his mother was Matron and where Daphne Southall, his future wife, was a pupil. She loved to tell how their friendship started following an incident when Hugh returned a piece of homework on which he had written [in red!] "7 out of 10. Not good enough. See me". They eventually married. Daphne had a cousin in the same class who recalled how all the girls had fancied this handsome young man and were very jealous of her!
Hugh registered as a conscientious objector in 1939 and, after a gruelling tribunal, received an unconditional exemption from military service, so he could continue his studies and train to be a teacher. His brother also wrestled with his conscience and felt he had to join the Army, Hugh said they had to listen to each other and learn to respect their different choices. After his time at Sidcot School, where it was said he was no soft touch on the discipline front, he moved in 1945 to work as assistant Physical Education (PE) instructor at Bournville Day Continuation School, combined with being a Youth Worker at the Cadbury's chocolate factory. While he loved the work, he became increasingly aware of the horrors of the war and felt he was being led to volunteer with the Friends Relief Service (FRS). He wrote, "I was under concern. My Meeting has listened and tested my concern". So he underwent six months' training, including learning to drive big trucks, before going to Berlin for a year followed by six months in Cologne. Towards the end of his life Hugh revisited the diaries he kept at the time and published them as a fascinating book in 2014, called The Training and Experience of a Quaker Relief Worker. He did wonder whether he had become desensitised to the horrors of war and the terrible conditions they found in post-war Germany. He wrote: "We had decided however that the present suffering is a bottomless pit… [and] we could not do it all". He did manage to go to many concerts, ballets and operas and the team held meeting for worship whenever they could. Both these kept them nourished and strengthened to cope with the horrors. He and his fellow workers had lots of, as he put it, riotous fun, but could make the transition into deep worship.
It is clear from his diary that his faith sustained him and was very profound. He was often asked to give a talk about his faith. In a Christmas broadcast he made, just before he returned to England, he said, "The profound need of our time is to realise the everlasting truth of the common Fatherhood of God, the Spirit of love and the oneness of the human race."
In 1949 he married Daphne at last. They had 3 children and eventually 4 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Both Hugh and Daphne were from long established Quaker families. After teaching at several types of school, including one for juvenile delinquents, in 1956 Hugh was appointed Headmaster of Sibford School. He set about transforming the school in accordance with his own Quaker beliefs. Earlier in his career he had been made to beat a pupil and he vowed never to do this again. He believed strongly in educating the whole person, so art, music and sports were given as much importance as academic subjects. At his funeral a former pupil recalled their astonishment when Hugh, as Headmaster, visited their gym class one day and suddenly leapt in the air, did a full somersault and landed back on his feet. To the end of his life he and Daphne continued to support Sidcot and Sibford Schools. After six years at Sibford School, he felt it was time for a new challenge and for the last thirteen years of his career he moved into teacher training. His work included setting up a course in health education for mature students.
Alongside this he was involved in youth and marriage guidance counselling. Hugh and Daphne shared a love of birdwatching, gardening, walking and music, singing together in a choir for many years and both playing the violin. In 1978 Hugh took early retirement and was able to devote much of the rest of his life to serving the Religious Society of Friends at local, area and national levels in many roles. He had a special interest in the Middle East and he and Daphne joined David Gray, who led many Woodbrooke Study Tours to the Holy Land. These two-week tours were thoroughly prepared in study weekends at Woodbrooke. Those who came on them learnt so much, were wonderfully cared for and met amazing people in each community who, sometimes at risk to their lives, were working for peace between the Israelis and Palestinians.
Hugh had a great sense of humour. Once, on one of the Tours of the Holy land, he alerted David Gray, a fellow lover of birdwatching, to "the Greater Spotted Hoodwink" visible from the bus window! Another time, at the Christmas Party, though he seldom touched alcohol, he gave a very funny performance of a poem (supposedly by a drunkard) in which, in each verse he became more and more slurred, so that he really seemed quite drunk by the end.
He would sometimes be invited to talk to pupils in local schools. One class had been studying Vera Brittain's Testament Of Youth, and were very impressed to hear that Hugh had known her and that she had influenced his decision to become a conscientious objector, after he had been corresponding with her leading up to his tribunal. All his life he was a prolific letter-writer. Every Sunday he was in his seat, deeply centred, at least fifteen minutes before the scheduled time of the start of Worship, so that people came into a gathered stillness. His vocal ministry was moving and deeply spiritual and he was always 'open to new Light'.
Hugh will be remembered in Stourbridge Meeting for his faithful attendance at business meetings, his commitment to the right holding of them and for his conscientiousness about any task he undertook. He always took time to welcome and talk to visitors to the meeting especially those coming for the first time. One person said, "his sparkling eyes, and flow of stories enthralled me to the Quaker way of 'living adventurously'. His welcome was gentle, encouraging and reflective. What a gift to have known him."
