JOHN P. MAW
A staunch member of the Old Men's Club died in Mayview, Mo., at the home of Mrs. Thomas Patterson, Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, May 8, 1917. His death was due to old age and general debility. Two days before he died he suffered a stroke of paralysis.
Mr. Maw was born in Lancaster Shire, England, November 20, 1824, and was 92 years of age. He was married on the 1st day of January, 1846, the 11th day of the same month he and his bride sailed from Liverpool going down the ocean into the Gulf of Mexico, and then up the Mississippi to Wisconsin, taking eight weeks to make the trip. To this union three children were born who were soon left motherless.
His second marriage was to Elizabeth Stephens of New York, November 18, 1865, and shortly after came to Missouri and settled on a farm near Cedar Grove in Lafayette county. He was a harness maker by trade and moved to Mayview, where he engaged in that business. His wife died in January 1917.
Besides one son, Robert, by his first wife, who now lives in Washington, there remains five daughters, Mrs. Sadie Blackburn and Bertha Drummond, both of Colorado, Mrs. Jettie Chandler of Chicago, Mrs. Gertie Wheatly of Jefferson City, and Mrs. Kate Kerr of this place.
He spent 75 years of his life in the cause of his Mater, being a member of the Christian church. His faith was of the highest type; always ready to say a good word for the advancement of the cause of Christ. The last few years of his life he was hindered by being blind and almost deaf.
We can truly say a good man has bone to his reward.
The funeral was conducted by Eld. Bedford of Higginsville, Wednesday, May 8 1917, at 1:30 o'clock at the Christian church. The remains were taken to Mayview Chapel cemetery and laid beside his wife to wait the call to come up higher, and receive the applaudits of "Well done good and faithful servant, enter into the joys of thy Lord."
