  • Notes
    • Dear Johan,

I've done a bit more searching for information about the death of William Ross Griffiths. Unfortunately I can find no record of his death either as it was registered, or in the National Probate Records under his full names. So the problem is compounded by the large number of William Griffithses. For the latter part of his working life he was working for the Great Western Railway in Birmingham. I had assumed that he died there and that his widow, Emma, moved down to St Ives after his death to live with her daughter, Doris, who was, by then, living in St Ives with her husband, Herbert Wedmore Martin. You may, of course, be right in thinking that the William R Griffiths, whose death was registered in Penzance in 1938 was my great-uncle. So I will take a pot-shot and get this person's death certificate, which should include his occupation, even if it does not state his second forename. I'll let you know the result. If this fails, I'll have a go at the most likely Birmingham death.

I see that you also have his brother, Frederick Francis on the Maw website. I have more details about him if you want to add them. Here they are:

      Born10.12.1868 - Clifton, Bristol
Employment07.08.1882 - Lad clerk, Great Western Railway, Bristol
Oct. 1899 - Chief Goods Manager, Great Western Railway, Paddington
By December 1917 - Clerk, Office of the Director of Taxes, London
By retirement - Income Tax Assessor
Marriage27.12.1917 - to Rose Crisford at the Register Office, St Pancras, Middlesex
      Residence10.12.1868 - 5 Oldfield Place, Bristol
      1881 - 23 Cowper Road, Bristol
      1891 - 12 Waverley Road, Bristol
      1901 - 36 Eastbourne Terrace, Paddington, Middlesex
1917 - 15 Lyme Street, St Pancras, Middlesex
      1925 - 25 Steele's Road, Hampstead, London
      1939 - 4 Steele's Road, Hampstead, London
Death18.12.1942 - Chescombe Lodge, Durdham Down, Bristol

I have documentary evidence for all these details. He died, of course, at his twin sister, Emily Maw's home.

      All the best,

      Richard Griffiths
