Alice Lucy Maw, who died on July 7, 2022, was beloved as "Miss Maw" for over thirty-five years as an advisor to students who came from other countries to earn undergraduate or advanced degrees at University of Southern Mississippi (USM) and, later, at Louisiana State University (LSU). She often spoke with gratitude about her good fortune in finding a vocation that she loved and that fit her so well.

As the daughter of Methodist missionaries, Rev. Joe and Gladys Maw, she spent her childhood with the name "Kumbi" in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo, Africa. Other than a couple of years of public school in Mississippi, her entire early education consisted of being taught at home and at a very small boarding school in Congo for the children of missionaries. After high-school graduation, she left her family in Africa and entered Mississippi Southern College (now USM).

Using her undergraduate degree in Marketing, Alice worked in retail sales in Memphis and in San Francisco before returning to USM for a master's in Counseling. This led to a position there in the admissions department. When a separate International Student Office was created, she found a way to focus her full commitment to this population. At USM and later at LSU, she devoted countless extra hours on behalf of students not only in her official capacity but also personally as a mentor, a cheerleader, and a friend to their families and communities. In return, she was showered with appreciation, many students staying in contact with her for the rest of her life. One student from South Korea named a daughter "Alice" to honor her. On two occasions, she traveled to Taiwan (ROC) as an official guest of the government, thanks to another student who had become a high-ranking official there. She was also a guide for a USM group of musicians who performed at various venues around the Republic of Korea. After she retired, former LSU students began steps to establish a Miss Alice Maw scholarship, which she deeply appreciated.

Alice's caring spirit was also apparent beyond her work. She was often the hub that maintained connection within groups of her own family and friends. In retirement she was a long-time volunteer for the American Cancer Society Shop and for Friends of the Library. And it should not be forgotten that Alice also devoted much care to a long line of "feline children." She supported multiple animal shelters and organizations and always mothered anywhere from three to seven cats indoors while feeding homeless ones outside. They had names like Pogo, Kadimashi, Trouble, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, and they enriched her life in many ways.

Though a Southerner at heart, Alice retired in Stockton, California, to be near her brother, Joe Maw, and his husband, Al Ferrer. They often traveled together to Europe and elsewhere, sometimes visiting former international students. Always passionate about reading, music, theater and art, she developed a late-life appreciation for New Orleans Saints and LSU football. Alice was grateful for her richly blessed life; her life blessed many others, too. She was 81 when she died in San Bruno, California from cancer. At her request there will be no funeral or memorial services. If you would like to do something in remembrance of Alice-of Miss Maw-you may make a donation to the Alice Maw Tribute/Scholarship Fund, c/o LSU Foundation, 3796 Nicholson Drive, Baton Rouge, LA 70802 or through the giving link www.lsufoundation.org/alicemaw or to your local animal-care organization. Or simply remember her and smile.
