He was 97 years young. Born to Guido and Elizabeth Righetti in 1916 at the Edna Valley house he called home his entire life, Ernest (Ernie to all who met him) graduated from Independence School, San Luis High School and Cal Poly. He partnered with his father for many years in dairy and cattle ranching. Demonstrating remarkable foresight in the 1960s, Ernie transformed the family business into an avocado-growing enterprise, first having built the largest privately-owned reservoir in the county. The Righetti Ranch soon developed into one of the most substantial avocado acreages in California. Always the optimist, he lit up any room he entered with his positive attitude and radiant smile. The ultimate renaissance man, possessed of singular intellectual curiosity, Ernie would gladly discourse on any subject, domestic or foreign. Not only a masterful farmer, rancher, welder and carpenter, he was also an expert catskinner, constructing roads, house pads, orchard terraces and fire lines for public and private clients from Big Sur to Ventura, Calif. He had a special passion for hunting, both in North America and in more remote places like Afghanistan, Nepal, and Mongolia. Always a gracious gentleman, he would spare any moment to help family, friends and strangers alike. A member of the Mountainbrook Community Church, Ernie gave back continuously to the entire community, having served with distinction on the boards of the Farm Supply Company, SLO County Farm Bureau, SLO County Range Improvement Association, SLO County Cattlemen's Association and California Avocado Commission. He also was a member of the SLO Sportsmen's Club, Arroyo Grande Sportsmen's Club, Native Sons of the Golden West and California Deer Association. Ernie represented the gold standard in human decency, compassion for the less fortunate and kindness to all. He will forever live in the hearts of all who had the good fortune to know him. The family extends its deepest appreciation to the caregivers who gave Ernie so much of themselves. Ernest Righetti is survived by his wife of 63 years, Susan; sons Craig (Marlene), Donald (Kristin), Scott and David (Tami); as well as grandchildren Tricia, Clint (Cristina), Lauren, Shaun, Jonny, Dalen and Gavin. The Righetti family is pleased to invite family and friends to a public celebration of Ernie's life and luncheon at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, at the Alex Madonna Exposition Center, 100 Madonna Road in San Luis Obispo. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be sent for the support and maintenance of the Cal Poly official weather station at: www.itrc.org/Righetti/ Dad, we will always love you and be guided by your wisdom!
