  	Deseret News obituary: John Layne Ballard died March 11, 1999, at his home in Salt Lake City, due to liver failure. He was born April 1, 1953, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Richard Derrall Ballard and Mona Rae (Maw) Ballard-Cole. John was a graduate of Highland High School, class of 1971. He graduated from Cal State University at San Bernadino. He also graduated from The Utah College of Massage Therapy. John was employed at Six States Distributing Co. Inadequate words are the only means his family can use to describe someone who, to a large degree, was an enigma. John was someone who had varied interests and motivations throughout his life. He lived a life of variety as well as uncertainty. The artistic values of discerning eyes brought him close to earth's natural elements. John was most content and peaceful as he gardened in his small plot of land behind his apartment. We are told he became radiant when he was able to give away home-grown vegetables to people and friends who passed by his happy garden. John communicated more within than without. We wish we could have known him more deeply and connected more firmly with a great intellect and an aesthetic vision.
