Elva Jean (nee Maw) Haugen, 85, peacefully passed away Dec. 3, 2015, with her loving family by her side. She was born Aug. 17, 1930, in Bismarck, N.D., the daughter of Ira and Hulda (nee Sonnenberg) Maw, and was a 56-year resident of Las Vegas. She was raised on a farm north of Tappen, N.D., and attended country school in rural Tappen, where she graduated in 1948. She married her lifelong partner, Norris Haugen, April 8, 1960. After attending University of Nevada, Reno, she attended University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where she was awarded both bachelor and master degrees in early childhood education. After being employed as a teacher by the Clark County School District, she founded the Eager Beaver Academy, where she continued her passion to teach. Elva is survived by her husband, of 55 years, Norris; one daughter, Wanda MacFarlane of Las Vegas; three sons, Randy Kiester of Las Vegas, James (Renee) Haugen of Livermore, Calif., and Gary Haugen of Las Vegas; seven grandchildren, John MacFarlane, Adam MacFarlane, Alicia Moody, Brittney Haugen, Branden Haugen, Spencer Haugen and Mitchell Haugen; and 11 great-grandchildren, Mariah, Jaden, Milo, Mason, Oliver, Cameron, Logan, Ava, A.J., Davin and Alexis MacFarlane, and Ethan Moody; one brother, Quincy (Caroline) Maw; one sister, Ruth Rangeloff; and many nieces and nephews. Viewing will be 9-10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, with service following, both at Mt. View Lutheran Church, 9550 W. Cheyenne Ave., Las Vegas. The Rev. Derek Klemm will officiate. Burial following at Memory Gardens Cemetery, 7251 W. Lone Mountain Road.
