CLIFTON-- Leonard A. Matson, 96, died Saturday, May 26, 2012, at Linn Community Nursing Home, Linn.
Mr. Matson was born May 28, 1915 at Denver, Colo., the son of John and Alma (Carlson) Matson.
He grew up in Washington County and attended Marcotte country school. He married Hulda Leiszler on June 5, 1940. They farmed and ranched north of Clifton until his retirement at 89. His wife preceded him in death on Jan. 28, 2010. He was also preceded in death by two daughters, Cleora Matson and Eileen Ransopher; one sister, Marie (Matson) Pinder; and two grandsons, Cameron and Wiley Blaha.
He was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Clara, Kan.; St. Mary's Catholic Church, Clifton; Washington Co. Extension Council; 4-H community leader; 4-H beef project leader; FHA Board; ASCS Board; past president of the Washington County Cattlemen's Assoc.; Washington County KLA; director of St. Bernard's Catholic Church Council; Brantford Community Center Board; Brantford Township Board; and a Democrat Party committee member. He received the 1971 Washington County Farm Family award, the 1971 Master Farmer award and the 1978 Soil Conservation Banker's award.
Survivors include three daughters, Jenell Smith and husband Dennis of Wichita, Irma Jean Blaha and husband Rod of Clifton and Hayley Matson-Mathes and husband Michael Mathes of Honolulu, Hawaii; one son-in-law, Jack Ransopher of Clyde; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 30 at the St. Mary's Catholic Church, Clifton, with the Rev. Larry Letourneau officiating. Burial will be in Rusco Cemetery, Washington County.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rosary being recited at 7 p.m.
Memorials may be made to Leonard Matson Memorial Fund to be designated by the family.
