    Obituary
    • Birth: Aug. 1, 1922 Death: Jan. 17, 1944
Sub-Lieutenant Walter Maw was just 21-years-old when his Hawker Sea Hurricane ploughed into the side of Fenwick Moor, Ayrshire. The exact circumstances of this tragic crash have remained a mystery but bad weather and low cloud that fateful day have always been blamed. A memorial plaque was placed at the crash site in 1997 which reads:

"In Memory of Sub Lt. WALTER MAW Age 21 770 Squadron Died When His Sea Hurricane NF684 Crashed 17th January 1944"
