Hi, just found your page and I am the gt,gt,gt grandson of William Watkin Bird. His mother was called Mary Ann Bird and he took his mother's surname as she didn't marry his father (George Rogers). Mary Ann was born on the channel island of Guernsey in 1815.
She had another son called William by another guy out of wedlock followed by Thomas by the father William Cobb who she did actually marry.
William Watkin married neighbour Charlotte Sooby and his half-brother married her sister Harriet. hope this is of interest.
