Notes - In 1850 John Hornby Maw, together with his sons George and Arthur, purchased the ailing, ceramic tile making business of the Worcester Porcelain Company.
The business was moved to Benthall, in the Iron Bridge Gorge in Shropshire, in 1852 and then again to a purpose built factory in Jackfield, Ironbridge, in the 1880's. By this time Maw and Company had become the world's largest producer of tiles and architectural ceramics selling more than 20 million pieces world-wide. In the late 1960's Maw and Company was acquired by H & R Johnson Tiles Ltd, of Stoke-on-Trent
