Thank you for your email. I am sorry not to have found the time before this evening to send you a reply.
I have no information about Sarah Wray beyond her baptismal record and that she was one of the many children of John Titus Netherwood Wray and Elizabeth Milner. I expect to receive further detail about her from a correspondent in the coming weeks, which I will send on to you.
I have some information about Sarah Wray's sisters: Charlotte and Maria Wray. I have more information about Emma Wray, from whom I descend.
Here is some detail of their lives:
Emma Wray
Emma Wray had an affair with Cuthbert Blades who was a non-resident Chelsea pensioner. He had served in the 2nd Regiment of Life Guards.
· She ran away from home after the liaison and went to live in Hull where Harry Cuthbert Blades Wray was born in 1856. His birth was officially recorded as illegitimate. He was baptised at Glanford Brigg the following year and Emma must have re-joined the family home sometime before that.
· The 1861 Census shows her working as a cook at the Angel Inn in the Market Place. It also shows Harry Wray as living with his grandfather.
· John Hocknell lived nearby in his widowed father's household. He was an agricultural labourer with few prospects. Emma Wray would have been a good catch for him.
· Neither John Hocknell nor Emma Wray could read or write. When they were married in 1861 they signed the register with their respective marks.
· Harry Cuthbert Blades Wray was brought up as the son of John Hocknell and Emma Wray. He took the name George Harry Hocknell.
Charlotte & Emma Wray
Charlotte Wray was a ladies maid and died unmarried.
· Maria Wray died unmarried.
I hope this information is useful. I will be pleased to send you further detail if you think it will add to your records.
With best wishes
Stuart
