    • William Edwin Maw - MILITARY SERVICE

Private 2765 (later 240761) 1/5th battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment.
      Enlisted 01/09/14. Joined C Company
Entered France 29/03/15, going overseas with B Company
Discharged through wounds 04/07/17, receiving Silver War Badge No 231760 (showing he had served).
      Sent to Brighton hospital
Died 27/04/22 of wounds received 28/08/16
      Buried 02/05/22, Gloucester Cemetery
      Probate - left £484 8s 5d to father

On the night of 27-28/08/16, A, B and C Companies of the 1/5th Gloucesters attacked a trench near Moquet Farm on the Somme, in support of the Anzac Corps' assault on Pozieres, and captured it.

      Battalion War Diary:
      27/08/16 7pm
"The battalion was ordered to attack trench from R32C50 - 33. C Coy attacked on the right and B Coy attacked on the left, both in two lines across the open.
A Coy. Two platoons advanced up communications trench X2A19 - R32C31. intense barrage for three minutes (this is a preliminary British barrage of the German trenches). Right Coy entered trench in their own barrage and left Coy at the moment it lifted. The bombing platoons met with considerable opposition in the communicator and a large party of Germans held out between Points 31 and 51 but were immediately forced to retire across the open when our Lewis guns accounted for all but three. Several dug-outs were bombed and the trench was consolidated and held. About 50 prisoners were taken and the enemy's other losses were estimated at about 200 killed or wounded and 1 machine gun captured. (It then lists the officers killed and wounded and mentions that 14 ORs were killed, 84 wounded - which would include William - and 10 missing) The trench and communicator were heavily shelled during the night. The prisoners belonged to the 5th Grenadier Guards Regiment."

It appears that William was wounded by a grenade (grenades, or bombs, as they were called, were used extensively in trench warfare, and more so than rifles later in the war). I imagine his wounds must have been pretty serious for him to be invalided out of the army.

      Dear Johan,

I am in the process of researching the old boys of the King's School, Gloucester, listed on the school war memorial, a project that has been ongoing for many years. William Edwin Maw was one of the 59 I am looking at.

I reproduce below what I know so far, and attach a very poor quality photocopy of his obituary in "The Cheltenham Chronicle and Gloucestershire Graphic". At some time I must revisit Gloucester Record Office and get a better copy. If you have anything you can add, I would be most grateful. I hope to eventually get something published through the school to commemorate the old boys who died in both World Wars.

As an aside, he will have known my Grandfather, who also worked in the Waggon Works' drawing office and joined the same battalion.

I hope this is of some use.
If you have any further information about the Gloucester side of the family that you think may be relevant, please let me know.

      Many thanks,

      Bob Brunsdon
