She was the dear mother of Murray (Catherine) of Guelph and Darlene (Reg) Schmunk of Port Moody, BC. Arlene was the loved grandmother of Candace, Lakita, Nathaniel and Kalyn. She was the dear sister of Donald (Velma) Hebert, Yvonne LeDuc, Cecile (Ted) Kirk and Jeanette (Brian) Davies and sister-in-law of Doris Hebert. Arlene was predeceased by her sister Pauline (late Jack) McLeod and her brother Paul Hebert and brother-in-law Harry LeDuc. | 741 | Carol Jane (Reynar) Hann CAROL JANE HANN (nee REYNAR) February 20th, 1933 (Toronto) - May 19th, 2010 (Oshawa) Carol was the eldest daughter of the late Norman and Pearl Reynar. Predeceased by her sister Norma and brother-in-law Ralph Kennedy and her eldest daughter Debbie Clarke. Carol is survived by her two daughters Beth Kelly (Shane), Michele Silva-Neto (Joe), Wayne Clarke whom she considered her son and brother Grant Reynar (Donna). Carol moved to Oshawa in the early 1950's with her then husband Robert Hann, young daughter and in-laws. Carol spent many happy summers at the family cottage on Balsam Lake, where she enjoyed boating and spending time with her family and friends. Carol always had a great love for her family, especially her grandchildren Kelsie Silva-Neto, Ely Silva-Neto, Jesse Silva-Neto, William Kelly and Hanna Kelly. Nephews David Kennedy (Cheryl), Tim Kennedy (Jean Kelly), Glenn Reynar (Rosemarie) and Stephen Reynar (Keri Lynn) and the rest of her extended family. Carol is also survived by her very dear friend Marilyn Patterson. The family would like to thank all those people who touched Carol in her care over these last few years. | 746 | Col Alfons Wiktor Mackowiak At the request of RBL Head Office GLD Standards were in attendance for the funeral of Col Alfons Wiktor Mackowiak, postumosly promoted to rank of General. His citation reads as follows:- 'Outstanding officer: distinguished himself by his exceptional bravery and his qualifications of a soldier throughout the campaign, especially 2nd and 14th June 1940 at Fremestroff, 15th at Alberstroff and 16th at Dieuze, where he did not cease commanding the fire of his battery, in spite of violent shooting of enemy artillery, giving best example to the gunners. On 17th June he dispersed an adverse company which was attacking positions and on the 18th forced the enemy to evacuate Embermenil, which they had taken. The present mention includes the award of the War Cross with Brass Star" Captured by Germans, interned for a period in Strasbourg. Escaped through Vichy France and Spain to Gibraltar. Boat to Britain, arrived in Liverpool trained in tanks before volunteering for the Polish parachute forces at Upper Largo. Selected for training as an agent with SOE, then becoming an instructor with SOE. Transferred in 1942 to Polish section of SOE (Special Operations Executive) to Audley End House, near Saffron Waldon, Essex, known as Station 43 (STS 43). Instructor in small arms, PT and unarmed combat, 1942-44. Sworn in SOE Cichociemny (Silent & Unseen). Return to action Monday 18th September 1944 at Arnhem. Flew from Manston by glider chalk number 890 as part of Polish Parachute Brigade Advance HQ, piloted by Staff Sergeant John 'Johnny' Cotterill and Sergeant Max Maxwell. Now with the rank of Captain. Fought with distinction as the Polish Artillery Liaison Officer attached to the RA. Operation Market Garden. Sniper hunting in the woods of Oosterbeek and directing allied artillery fire in the Oosterbeek perimeter. Wounded. At conclusion of the Battle of Arnhem, captured and POW at Oflag 1XA at Spangenberg, Germany. Liberated by Americans 4 May 1945. Received his third Krzyz Waleczny. In total during the Second World War he received no less than 14 medals. In 2009 - Awarded the highest medal of bravery by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. Demobbed in Fife in July 1947. Remained in the U.K. His peacetime record: entered a burning Wellington bomber rescuing the pilot and crew. Awarded a Commendation by King George V1, in recognition of his bravery and courageous action in extricating the pilot from the blazing Wellington on 11th July 1950. Published in Supplement to the Evening Gazette, Tuesday, 24th April 1951. Burial will be in the O'Neill Cemetery with Flag Presentation by the O'Neill American Legion Simonson Post #93. Visitation will be Monday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM with a 7:00 PM Prayer Service at Biglin's Mortuary in O'Neill. Memorials may be given to the Church. Don passed away Friday, February 14, 2014, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE. Don was born on February 26, 1929 in Creston, NE to Robert H. and Minnie (Bridges) Maw. He attended school in Creston until the age of 8 when his family moved to Columbus, NE. He graduated from Kramer High School in Columbus in 1946. Don served in the US Army during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. In August of 1953 Don moved to O'Neill and started working for Motor Parts, Inc. He was manager and part owner for 46 years, retiring in 1999. Throughout his career Don was dedicated to serving the O'Neill community and spent a lot of time taking care of customers all hours of the day. He met Peggy Alm at the United Methodist Church in O'Neill and on July 15, 1956 they were united in marriage at the church they met in. Don was a long- time member of the United Methodist Church. He was very active in the church, serving on a number of boards and holding many church offices. He served as lay leader for many pastors over the years and sang in the church choir for 50 years. Don was also a very dedicated Sunday School teacher, teaching 5th and 6th graders as well as adults for close to 60 years. In his spare time Don was a small planes Pilot and served on the O'Neill Airport Authority Board. He also enjoyed family time, going on outdoor expeditions with his family, working on cars and wood working. He is survived by his wife of 57 years Peggy, daughter, Lorraine Maw of Lexington, KY, son, Chuck and wife Debbie of Bourbonnais, IL, a sister Ardith Greenquist of San Jose, CA, and numerous nieces and nephews.
