56879 | The Airmen's Stories - P/O I K S Joll Ian Kenneth Sefton Joll was born on 3rd February 1920 at East Grinstead and was educated at Hurstpierpoint College. He joined 604 Squadron, Auxiliary Air Force in March 1939 and was called to full-time service on 24th August 1939. Joll went to 8 FTS Montrose to attend No. 13 Course, which ran from 9th October 1939 to 6th March 1940. With his training completed, Joll rejoined 604 Squadron, then based at Northolt. Above image courtesy of Christopher Joll On 10th May the squadron provided an escort for Blenheims that were detailed to bomb German transport aircraft on the beach at Wassenaar, Holland. Joll destroyed a Ju52. After the bombing Joll decided to carry out a low-level strafe of the beach. His port propeller came off, either shot off by ground fire or by striking the ground. His Blenheim, L1517, crash-landed on the beach but did not catch fire and Joll and his gunner, LAC J Pickford, were not badly hurt. With the help of Dutch civilians they made their way to Amsterdam and were able to embark on the ss Dotterel, which evacuated the Polish, British and French consular staff as well as civilians and press correspondents on 13th May. On 5th July 1940 Joll was detached to St. Eval for RDF trials. He rejoined the squadron on the 18th and served with 604 throughout the Battle of Britain. The squadron's Blenheims were gradually replaced with Beaufighters from September 1940, crewed by pilots and radar operators. On 10th October Joll damaged a He111 south of Bournemouth. From 9th to 23rd March 1941 Joll attended a course at No. 1 Beam Approach School, Watchfield. During the night of 1st/2nd May 1941 Joll, flying with Sgt. AA O'Leary, was closing in to attack a He111 north of Swindon when a burst of return fire severely wounded O'Leary and damaged the Beaufighter. With O'Leary's help, Joll managed to get the aircraft safely back to base. On 5th/6th May Joll, flying with Sgt. RW Dalton, shot down a Ju88 over Chawleigh, Devon, on 6th/7th June they shot down a Ju88 into the sea off Poole, Dorset, on the 8/9th damaged a He111 over Botley, Hampshire and in the early hours of 5th July they shot down a He111 near Oakford, Devon. Joll was posted away on 16th July 1941 to 54 OTU Church Fenton as an instructor. On 9th April 1942 Joll was posted to 153 Squadron, recently reformed at Ballyhalbert. He returned to 604 Squadron, then at Middle Wallop, in October 1942. He destroyed a Do217 on 21st September 1943 60 miles east of Spurn Head. He was awarded the DFC (gazetted 29th October 1943). Joll was released from the RAF late in 1943 as a Squadron Leader. He worked at the Colonial Office in Whitehall from December 1943 until January 1945. He served at the Directorate of Combined Operations in New Delhi from February to November 1945. In London he had met Eileen Mary Sassoon Sykes, they married after the war. As an ambulance driver in 1941 she had driven an artificial leg from Roehampton to Horsham St. Faith, where it was loaded into a Blenheim to be dropped during a raid on St. Omer. It was intended for Douglas Bader, who had been shot down and captured on 9th August. Joll died on 8th February 1977. | Joll, Squadron Leader Ian Kenneth Sefton DFC (I7407)

56887 | The day has come for us to say "see you later." It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of our Super Hero, husband, father, son, brother, uncle, nephew. Blaine David Maw at the age of 57 left us far too soon in the arms of his girls on July 26, 2021. After the most courageous 8 year battle against his cancer. Blaine was always quick to get started with any and every type of ammunition to fight his cancer. He wasn't a quitter and had such a strength and sense of humour which got us through the toughest times. He had his boxing gloves on until the end. Blaine was born in Huntsville to the late Sam and Hilda Maw. He was the 2nd youngest of 11 children. Blaine leaves behind the love of his life and wife Kathy of 30 years (September). His pride and joy, daughter Kiley, soon to be son in law Ryan Harris, and his best buddy Bentley. Siblings Linda Smith (predeceased), Sandy (Julien) Pelletier, Gary (Carol) Maw, Heather (Doug) Spiers, Darlene (Don) Rogers, Darrell (Rhonda) Maw, Bonnie (Rick) Jylha, Cheryl (John) Ranger, Leon (Lauretta) Maw, Lori (Mike) Welsh. In-laws Isabel (Don) Watson, Robert (Sharon, predeceased) Dickson, Roxanne Vollans, Dan Dickson (Ashley), Shane Watson (Jen), Candace (Matt) Johnson and Angela Watson. A huge number of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews-too many to name. He will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends. Blaine loved life, he was one of the most dedicated and loyal people we have ever known. Blaine took great pride and joy in his long career with the Town, working in many departments. But caring for the cemeteries and helping many families during the most difficult times was closest to his heart. He was a wealth of information, if ever you were trying to find a loved one in the cemetery. He always worked hard and perfected anything he put his mind to. He was our life of the party always and made sure he was the last to leave. There were many visits over the years at our home where Blaine loved to have a beer and entertain us all with his crazy stories and antics. We are forever grateful for the love and support we have received from family and friends throughout this journey and for an amazing medical team. 56890 | The entry in the I of A transcripts reads: HOLGATE Ebba* Charles Mary Ann Born 17 Aug 1889 Bap 18 May 1897 CW Epworth I would think that the parents gave the clerk the dates of birth. As Charles and Mary Ann had 4 children christened on the 18 May 1897 and Ebba was the oldest (9). They probably had the birth date wrong as Alan has a copy of the BC. *It would seem that the transcriber got her name right (from the register) but the writer of the BC also had it in error? 56896 | THE HEAD of a historic South Derbyshire family has paid tribute to his mother, who has died at the grand old age of 98. Janet, Lady Every, died at her home in Egginton on Saturday, bringing to a close a life in which she experienced two world wars and dramatic changes in society. She lived in a cottage bordering the family home of Cothay, where the Everys have resided since selling historic Egginton Hall before the Second World War. The current occupant, Sir Henry Every, 13th Baronet, said his mother had maintained her 'vitality and independence' right up until a short illness days before her death. He said: "My mother was a very Christian lady and for years she was very much involved in that side of life. She was a lovely lady and, like many people of her age, had seen tremendous changes in the world. "She was born into a house with no electricity, gas, water or telephone. She lived into an era of computers and space travel, but always kept a huge interest in what was going on in the world. She was always an interesting person to talk to. "She was in remarkably good health and how fortunate she was to be able to continue to live in her own home and in such a special community, a village which maintains old-fashioned values and where people continue to look after each other." After her first marriage failed, she married Sir Henry's father, the 12th baronet, Sir John Every, whom she met during the war, and moved to Egginton, where she nursed her husband after he endured a serious operation for stomach ulcers, and continued to live after his death. She is predeceased by a son from her first marriage, Joe, and survived by a daughter from that marriage, Anne, and children from her second marriage, Sir Henry, Celia and Juliette. Her funeral will be held at St Wilfrid's Church on Saturday, November 27, at noon.
