53865 | Proposed Change: Maw Roger Hargreaves (I14880) Tree: The Maw Family Link: Description: ________________________ September 1992 - Wartime wooden horse hero dies Wooden horse hero: Wing Commander Roger Hargreaves Maw who died back in 1992. YOUR Mail was sad to report the death of local hero Wing Commander Roger Hargreaves Maw - the man who made the Wooden Horse of Sagen - back in 1992. Wg Cdr Maw was central to the daring escape from a World War Two prison camp, Stalag Luft III, where he had been sent after being shot down on a bombing sortie. As the prisoners' camp carpenter, the Wing Commander was asked to join the escape committee. There his task was to build a vaulting horse, which he made out of any pieces of wood he could find, including wooden crates the Red Cross had sent containing food supplies. Whilst his fellow prisoners of war jumped over the vaulting horse, men slowly but surely tunnelled to freedom and returned by the time the exercise period each day had finished. Then one day, two men were carried to the hole and never returned to the barracks. The result of one of the most daring escapes in history was 14 days in the 'cooler' for Wg Cdr Maw. He was born on a Kirton Lindsey farm in 1906 and his heart remained firmly in the land even after he took to the air with the RAF's 503 Special Reserve Squadron at Waddington in 1927. He served in the RAF's equivalent to the Territorial Army until the outbreak of war and was commander of 12 Squadron Wellingtons at Binbrook by 1941. He flew out to Egypt to take over 108 Squadron but never enjoyed his new company. After being shot down, he was taken to the German war camp and became one of the 1,200 Allied prisoners of Stalag Luft III. He remained there for two and a half years until he was liberated by the British in 1945. After the war, he returned to his farm at Welton where he farmed until 1973 and on his retirement moved to Forest House in Walesby with his wife Janet. He died at the age of 86. jmaw jamesmaw @ tiscali.co.uk | Maw, Wing Commander Roger Hargreaves (I14880)
