53353 | Notes from Carla (Sandy) Anderson-Butler : Hi Johann: My Grandfather was a Maw, but George and his brother Henry Maw left England on 4-5-1843. When they arrived, my grandfather George decided to change the spelling of Maw to Maugh. In my research and with the help of Frederick Maw IV, I found out that Georges parents names were James Maw and Mary Booth Maw. They were born about 1798, but it does not say where in England. I know George Maw, Henry Maw and their sister was born in Shieffield, England. I am wondering if My Maw family is related to your Maw family. I am interested in going back as far as I can. If you can help me I would really appreciate it. Also, if you need anymore information. I can give you what I have. I know George Maw and his brother Henry, settled first in Wisconsin, and then moved to Owatona, Minnesota. George also had 12 children. His wifes name was Laura Ann Phillips. There only sister Anne married a Harrison. Laura Ann Phillips was born 3-70-1827 and died 7-5-1904. Not sure where Laura was born. Laura Ann also remarried a Daniels. George was born 12-18-1826 and Died 1-22-1875. Henry Maw married Louise Reynolds, their son was Frederick Maw Born 1868. I hope this helps. Thankyou Sandy Butler | Maw, Henry Snr (I11865)

53354 | Notes from information provided by Joan Tonks, nee Senior. Ethel Amelia's mother died in childbirth when my mother was 8 years old. I don't know if the baby survived. She left school at the age of 13 and went into domestic service. I don't know where she went or how old she was at the time. I know at some time she was employed by a Dr Dixon, somewhere in Headingley, Leeds. She met Thomas William Senior when she was working as a maid, for the manager of Barclays Bank, Market Place, Pontefract. TW Senior and Sons builders were doing some alterations of the premises and my father was doing the plastering. During the 1st World War, she worked at a munitions factory in Leeds. At this time she lived in lodgings in Featherstone and this is where she and my father lived when he came out of the army. Her brothers were called Nowell and Ned (short for Edward). They were both miners at Featherstone and played cornets in the colliery silver band. They entered competitions as part of the band and because they were such good players they were offered jobs at a woollen mill at Huddersfield, so they could play for them. Uncle Nowell lived at Clayton West, near Huddersfield, and died there sometime in the 1960s, I think. I know that he married twice in his lifetime, and there was a daughter to his first wife, but we was a Down's syndrome child. There was another daughter called Mildred. I think Uncle Ned moved to Doncaster. I remember a cousin Jessie coming to see my mother. She was Mrs Flewitt, 163 Coppice Road, Highfields Doncaster but she died about 15 years ago. I know she had a daughter but I don't know her name. I have found an address in an old diary of my mother's and I think it may be hers, but I am not sure. Mrs Brumble, 27 Green Lane, Carcroft, Doncaster. | Frost, Ethel Amelia (I19)

53363 | Obituaries William C. Sturtevant; Expert on Indians By Louie Estrada Washington Post Staff Writer Saturday, March 17, 2007 William C. Sturtevant, 80, a curator emeritus of North American ethnology at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History and a leading scholar on the traditional cultures of North American tribes, died March 2 at the Collingswood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Rockville. He had emphysema. Dr. Sturtevant's career with the Smithsonian spanned half a century, beginning in 1956 as an ethnologist at the Bureau of American Ethnology. When the bureau closed nearly 10 years later, Dr. Sturtevant became a curator in the anthropology department at Natural History, a position he held until retiring in January. He continued to work at his office as curator until his death. Among his colleagues and peers, he was known for his encyclopedic knowledge of the material culture of Native Americans and the importance of clothing, cooking utensils, tools and art as identity markers. His research encompassed field work, archival and museum research, and the search for and interpretation of early drawings and paintings. Dr. Sturtevant, an anthropologist by training, was recognized as a pioneer in the interdisciplinary fields of ethnohistory and ethnoscience. He published more than 200 articles and, in 1970, headed the planning of the Smithsonian's Handbook of North American Indians, a 20-volume encyclopedia covering language, culture and history. He served as the handbook's general editor until his death. He was past president of the American Society for Ethnohistory, the American Ethnological Society, the American Anthropological Association and the Anthropological Society of Washington. Dr. Sturtevant, who lived in the District, was born in Morristown, N.J. His father, Alfred H. Sturtevant, was a noted geneticist at Columbia University and later the California Institute of Technology; his mother was a scientific illustrator. The younger Sturtevant served as a Navy pharmacist's mate in the Pacific during World War II. He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1949 and received a doctorate in anthropology from Yale University in 1955. About that time, he began a decades-long advocacy in aiding indigenous cultures when he testified persuasively on Capitol Hill before a subcommittee on Indian affairs in support of the Seminole tribe's opposition to legislation that would have ended its federally recognized status. His marriage to Theda Maw Sturtevant ended in divorce. A son, Alfred Boyan Maw Sturtevant, died in 1989. Survivors include his wife of 16 years, Sally McLendon of New York and Washington; two children from his first marriage, Kinthi Diana Maw Sturtevant of New York and Reed Padi Maw Sturtevant of Lexington, Mass.; two stepdaughters, Annabella Pitkin and Dr. Rosemary Pitkin, both of New York; a sister, Harriet S. Shapiro of Chevy Chase; a brother, Alfred Henry Sturtevant of Portland, Ore.; and a grandson. | Sturtevant, William Curtis (I31020)

53364 | Obituary Grant Streeper Maw August 18, 1926 ~ December 6, 2020 (age 94) Grant S. Maw passed to the next life with his family at his side on Sunday, December 6, 2020. He was greeted with much love and joy by those who had gone before. Grant left behind his earthly loved ones and, thankfully, the wheelchair that confined him for nearly 30 years. Despite his struggle with FSHD, a form of muscular dystrophy, Grant never complained and never stopped doing his best to live life to the fullest and "carry on." His example of unconditional love and enduring trials with faith, courage, and a constant smile has left a legacy that will long impact the life of his posterity and all that knew him. Grant was born in Ogden, Utah, to Glen Jones Maw and Ethelyn Anna Streeper, the eldest of two sons. His brother Lowell preceded him in death in 2015. He graduated from Ogden High School and went on to earn Bachelor and Juris Doctorate Law degrees from the University of Utah. In 1944, he was drafted into the Army, serving in World War II for two years and then honorably discharged at the rank of Staff Sergeant. During his service, he earned many medals, including the Bronze Star, while serving at General McArthur's Headquarters in Manila and Tokyo. Grant's service to his country continued with a career as a Patent Lawyer in the JAG office at Hill Air Force Base. Additionally, he practiced law privately and served as a part-time federal magistrate in the Department of Justice. Grant also taught Business Law evening classes at Weber State University. As a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he held many positions that included Ward Clerk, 70's Quorum President, Ward Mission Leader, Employment Specialist, and more. Grant served several missions for the Church. The first was in Toronto, Canada, in 1948. He was serving a mission in the Ogden Spanish Branch when he met his wife, Mildred June Hurst, in 1957. In 1982, he and Mildred served in the Baton Rouge Louisiana Mission. He regularly shared his testimony of the truthfulness of the Gospel and eternal families. Grant and Mildred were married on May 29, 1958, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple and spent their married lives together in Ogden, where they raised their three daughters. He was active in civic service, including the Sons of the Utah Pioneers. Grant will fondly be known for his creativity and love of writing. His highly imaginative, impromptu bedtime stories are still vivid decades later in the minds of his children and grandchildren, who will pass them on for generations in a book he authored for his descendants. He spent hours a day writing. These included stories about dinosaurs, magic, monsters, and fantasy. Treasured writings for family include analyses of Zenos from the Book of Mormon and Giants in the Old Testament. On the day he passed, he perfectly recited some of his favorite poems to his family, The Owl and the Pussy Cat, The Gingham Dog and the Calico Cat, and Wynken, Blynken, and Nod. We imagine Dad sailing on that river of crystal light into a sea of dew. This Christmas Eve, memories of his recitations of Santa in an Uptown Flat and A Tale of John Henry Paul Brown will warm our hearts. Grant was a child at heart for all of his 94 years. Some of our favorite memories include his expert singing and harmonica playing. We fondly remember his versions of Turkey in the Straw and the Big Rock Candy Mountain. In his youth, hiking Ogden's mountain ranges and spending time in nature occupied much of his free time. In later years, he would play dominoes, rook, and scrabble for hours with his family and grandchildren. The latter remember trips to neighborhood parks and especially, Farr's Ice cream as highlights to their visits. But most important was the time he spent listening and enjoying the company of family and friends. Grant's Patriarchal blessing states his purity and sweetness of life, which touched and inspired all that knew him through his generosity, kindness, sense of humor, wit, courage, and perseverance. His life of service to others is an inspiration to all. The family would like to thank the many aides and healthcare professionals who served him lovingly during the last years of his life. We especially want to thank Harmony hospice for their loving care in his final days - Devin, Emily, and Blake "his buddy" (who was his aide for over ten years). Many caregivers, too numerous to name, have become dear friends who visited him regularly, including the last day of his life. We love and thank them for their service. Grant is survived by his wife, Mildred June Hurst, and their three daughters, Meridee Theresa Maw Calder (Glen), Cynthia Ann Maw, Jeanette Maw McMurtry (John); 8 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Glen and Ethelyn, and brother, Lowell. Some of Grant's last counsel to his family was to "Be Happy" with whatever life brings. The following quotes embody his philosophy. "The grand essentials to happiness and life are something to do, something to love, and something to hope for." Joseph Addison, English Poet and Playwright "If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap. If you want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime, help someone else." Chinese Proverb "Perhaps the most essential of a father's work is to turn the hearts of his children to their Heavenly Father. If by his example as well as his words a father can demonstrate what fidelity to God looks like in day-to-day living, that father will have given his children the key to peace in this life and eternal life in the world to come." - Elder D. Todd Christopherson Shine On! Dear father, your light will guide us forever and always. #LightTheWorld Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 12, 2020 at 2 p.m. at Lindquist's Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Friends may visit with family on Saturday from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Ogden City Cemetery. Services will be livestreamed here at the bottom Grant's obituary. | Maw, Grant Streeper (I17981)

53368 | Obituary Mildred June Hurst Maw June 20, 1921 ~ February 1, 2022 At the age of 100 years old, Mildred June Hurst Maw left this life for the next on Tuesday, February 1, 2022. She left behind her greatest treasures – daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her legacy included unconditional love for all, unending service, and an undying thirst for knowledge. She often reiterated that it was the only thing you take to the other side. Born in El Paso, Texas, on June 20, 1921, Mildred graduated from high school at 15. Next, she attended Brigham Young University, where she studied business, finance, and journalism, earning honors and a nomination into Who's Who in American Universities. After graduating from college with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business and a second degree in Spanish, she worked as a secretary for the Deaf and Blind School in Ogden, the Southern Pacific Railroad in Texas, GE, and Senator Watkins of Utah in Washington, D.C. Upon settling in Ogden, she was an instructor of business skills at Weber State for many years. On May 29, 1958, Mildred married her noble and loving husband, Grant Streeper Maw, in the SLC Temple. Together they had three daughters, Meridee, Cynthia, and Jeanette. She served in many callings for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, including Relief Society President and instructor for Relief Society and Gospel Doctrine classes, which she taught for over 25 years until the age of 85. She served tirelessly as a proud member of Daughters of Utah Pioneers, Weber State women's groups, and school and community organizations throughout Ogden. Another of her passions was genealogy, spending decades researching to complete temple work for her ancestors and more. Mildred served four missions for the LDS Church: Mexico covering El Paso, TX, to the Panama Canal, Ogden Spanish Speaking, SLC Genealogical, and Spanish-Speaking Baton Rouge, LA, with her husband. Even at 100 years of age, she spoke eloquent Spanish. Mildred was a friend to all and maintained many close friendships for decades. Undoubtedly, she will be remembered for seldom speaking ill of others her entire 100 years, except maybe a politician or two. Her kindness and genuine interest in others left a legacy of love. Her granddaughter, Jessica McMurtry, summed up her life as "100 Years of Loving the World. 100 Years of the World Loving You Right Back." Her children and grandchildren have beautiful memories of her stories about their Mormon pioneer ancestors. She treasured her scriptures and read The Book of Mormon to her children each night at the dinner table. Mildred often shared her love of learning, including historical and classical literature. She could still recite lines from Longfellow, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Bryant, and more just days before her passing. Hours were spent with her siblings, children, and grandchildren playing Rook, Scrabble, Parcheesi, Chutes and Ladders, and more as she solidified precious relationships. Her laughter and sense of adventure were contagious. Spending time with loved ones was her greatest gift. While singing was not her forte, she will be remembered for the lullabies she passed on from her mother that put her children and grandchildren to sleep under her loving care despite always being off-key. Although her children played many musical instruments proficiently, she insisted she played the radio best. A legacy of exploration, to ancestorial and historical sites, are some of her family's fondest memories. These trips include the Mormon Pioneer Trail from Palmyra to Salt Lake City, the Mormon Colonies in Mexico where her Hurst and Call ancestors lived, Revolutionary War Sites during the Bicentennial Celebration, Washington, D.C., Great Britain, Europe, and National Parks. In true fashion as a teacher, Mildred prepared her family with nightly study sessions for months before. Although she missed her late husband, Grant, her faith in the Lord and his plan of salvation carried her through the lonely months until he came for her. "By an unfaltering trust, approach thy grave, Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch About him, and lies down to pleasant dreams." Thanatopsis, William Cullen Bryant The family wishes to thank her many caretakers over the years, who became beloved friends to her and her family. Mildred is survived by her daughters Meridee Theresa Maw Calder (Glen), Cynthia Ann Maw, Jeanette Maw McMurtry (John), eight grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. Dearest Mother, Grandmother, Great-grandmother, Aunt, and Friend, you are loved and missed. Your star will continue to guide us through your eternal strength and example. Shine On! No coming, no going. No after, no before. I hold you so close; I release you to be free.
