How did he manage this? Did he inherit the brewery? Who was living at Bentley Brewery Oulton in 1841 - would be worth looking at this census. From the birth of the children, it looks like they moved about 1844. Note: It might be worth looking for Mitchell's in 1841 in Astley/Swillington/Kippax Census 1881 Grange Farm, Floxton, York, England William Rownthwate Head 44 b Lilling, Yorkshire Farmer of 55 acres employing 1 man Ann Rownthwate WIfe 42 b Woodlesford, Yorks Farmer's wife Mary Mitchell Wid M-in-law 70 b Woodlesford, Yorks Annuitant Sarah Mitchell Un S-in-law 32 b Woodlesford, Yorks Annie T Wahey Un Serv 18 b S Millington, Yorks General servant William Park.. Un Serv 28 Little Easton, Essex Farm servant (indoor) Census record for 1881 confirms that William Mitchell died before 1881, indicating the his death may have occurred in 1873, as Peter Featherstone's notes suggest. As he seems to have been a wealthy farmer, so may have left a will. Death registers show the death of a William Mitchell of the right age but there is no entry in the probate calendars for 1873 or the 5 years after that. Mary Mitchell died in 1890. She left a will but it does not give much information. Sarah Mitchell went to live with her sister Eliza Pickersgill at the Old Castle Brewery in Pontefract. The book on pubs from the Pontefract musuem shows that the Pickersgills were at the Castle Brewery from 1878 - 88 and that Eliza Pickersgill was 'in charge' for a while, followed by W Pickersgill and Co. Later, Eliza's son Earnest Edward Pickersgill seems to have taken over and to have been there until the 1940s. A posting to the WRY list did not elicit any responses from potential decendants. There is a list of Pickersgills still in Pontefract, on the electoral register on the other computer. Maybe a mailshot? | Mitchell, William (I39)
