2502 Comments (The Maw Family): Your family website contains a reference to Robert George Holmes. From the information in your document it is evident that this is my great uncle. After his time in the army, he joined he South African police force, and was the first policeman to be murdered in South Africa. If you are interested, I can supply all your missing information on this gentleman including a photograph of his headstone. I also have photographs of his funeral procession which was very long. The funeral oration was given by General Smuts.

2503 Comments (Tree: The Maw Family): Hi
Just found your site and think we have a connection.
I am descended from Christian Rudolf Otto (who worked with Carl Schultz in Paulinzella at the Schulze brothers' organbuilders). My understanding is that Brindley and Foster (Sheffield based organ builders) 'headhunted' the two young men to work for them in England.
I believe that they arrived in Hull and know that they worked on the recently restored Doncaster Cathedral organ, as well as some in East London. My great grandfather was a voicer which meant that he cut the pipes.
Carl and Rudolf were later joined by Carl's sister Johanna Emmeline Schultz who kept house for the two men. Rudolf and Emmeline married in Hull in 1866. They moved to Sheffield and had Sophia, William/Wilhelm, Ernest Rudolf and Lily (infant death). Ernest was my grandfather. The two boys also worked as organ builders before setting up a furniture shop in Sheffield.
I believe that Emmeline travelled to Germany fairly often to visit her siblings. I also believe that her mother's maiden name was Heerwagen and that the family came from the Thüringen region.
Maybe some of this sounds familiar. If so, it would be good to share stories.

Hi, just found your page and I am the gt,gt,gt grandson of William Watkin Bird. His mother was called Mary Ann Bird and he took his mother's surname as she didn't marry his father (George Rogers). Mary Ann was born on the channel island of Guernsey in 1815.
She had another son called William by another guy out of wedlock followed by Thomas by the father William Cobb who she did actually marry.
William Watkin married neighbour Charlotte Sooby and his half-brother married her sister Harriet. hope this is of interest.
Kind Regards
Anthony

Shows John and Anne Kitchen had a son William Kitchen born 1876 in Thurgaton. There is no mention of him in your records.I am helping my neighbour Raymond Charles Kitchener look into his Family. Rays Father was Walter Charles Kitchener born 1911 in New Brompton. Walter had a Brother William Mawe Kitchener born 1908 in Medway. Their Father was William Kitchener norn 1876 in Thurgaton. William was in the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1911 . He died 26th April 1948 in Gillingham .Kent. We think that William Kitchener was originally William Kitchen son of your John and Anne. (there are no records of William Kitchener other than the 1911 Census)
William would be Rays Grandfather.
Have you any knowknowlege of William Kitchen or Kitchener
born Thurgaton. Nottingham.
He must be connected as his first child he called William Mawe Kitchener?
Hoping you can help us.

Thanking you

2508 Comments: Hello - I am working on my Harrison family. I have a Mary Harrison born in 1818 in Yorkshire, England. Her family emigrated to Canada in 1831 and settled in Toronto Gore Township, Peel County. She does not appear with the family in the 1852 census. I have noticed that a Mary Harrison was married to John Maw in 1846 in Etobicoke. Her witness at the wedding was William Harrison. Her father's name was William and she also had a brother by that name. I am wondering if it might be her. Mary was from a Catholic family but John Maw appears to be a Wesleyan - though he said he was "independant" in the 1861 census. I was wondering if you had any information of sponsors at baptisms etc.. with other Harrison names that I could cross reference with her known family to see if she is the Mary I am looking for?

Thanks so much.

I am a descendant of Richard Maw (11th generation Maw born in 1818). Richard immigrated to Canada when he was 16. He is my 2nd great grandfather on my mother's side. What is the best way to add the families journey in Canada to this website?
The Family Maw website is incredibly well done! I was so thrilled to discover it last evening. It tied to together a piece my family and I have been trying to find for awhile. Thank you so much for making it public.
Very kind regards,
Patricia

2511 Comments: Hello!
I came across your website while researching Laurence Frank Gatenby (died 14 Jan 1917 in WW1; your UID 8EFFED86FAB043F4BBF0852D2591BD09BA40)
The Imperial War Museum in London has set up a website "Lives of the First World War" to remember those, civilian or in the military who were involved in WW1. It will be a permanent digital record.
I have set up a community devoted to those men who were cricketers, Laurence Gatenby being one of them. I am particularly interested in the Tassie men since, prior to returning to the UK last year, I lived and worked in Launceston for 14yrs.
I am therefore contacting you to see if you would be interested in adding anything to the IWM website. You would need to create an account but, although you need to subscribe to search the records (in association with "find My Past") it is completely free to add information.
Please see «u»«/u»
for what I have added to his life story so far.
Would you mind if I create a link to the page on him in your family tree as part of the evidence for his life story?
I look forward to hearing from you,
Kath Kelly

2526 Comments: I am updating a 1997 publication which contains biographical notes on all officers of the 23rd Foot, or Royal Welch Fusiliers from their formation in 1689 to 1914. I served in the regiment, and am working on various aspects of their history, instead of getting on with my own family's history! Your work is most impressive and clear.

I have been concentrating on the Napoleonic period as a book is being written based on the diaries and letters of those who served in the regiment at that time, one of them being J H S (we had initials only) Maw, about whom there was a very sketchy entry. The Army List , however, recorded him as J__H__L__ (again, giving his initials only). In manuscript, I think a capital L and S might look very similar. To my surprise and delight typing JHL Maw into Google brought me to your website.

There is no doubt in my mind that JHL and JHS Maw are the same person.

The document which convinced me was his obituary in The Gentleman's Magazine of 1812, a copy of which is attached.[P.S. I don't seem to be able to do this] It has been reprinted in a comparatively recent publication, namely A History of the Peninsular War, Vol. VIII - The Biographical Dictionary of British Officers Killed and Wounded 1808-1814, by John A. Hall and published in 1998 by Greenhill Books, London (ISBN 1 85367 315 3). John Maw's entry reads:

MAW, J. H. L., Capt., 23rd Foot: Capt., Army, 3 Dec. 1806; Capt., 23rd Foot, 9 July 1807. Killed, storming of Badajoz, 6 April 1812 [London Gazette]. Obituary, The Gentleman's Magazine, June 1812, pp. 594-5 [April 7. Fell gloriously in the arms of victory, at the storming of Badajoz, in his 29th year, Capt. Maw, of the 23d reg. or Royal Welsh Fusileers, eldest son of John Henry M. esq. of Belle-Vue, near Doncaster. In him the service has lost a zealous and intelligent officer, and his friends have to lament a most honourable, well-disposed young man, a cheerful companion, and a good Christian. He served on the Quarter-master General's Staff, at the battles of Vimiera and Talavera, in the Peninsula, under the Earl of Wellington, and previously in the same department of the army under Lord Cathcart, in Scotland.].

My still-sketchy entry in our book, to which I must add information from his obituary, now reads:

MAW, John Henry Shaw
He was christened on 27 September 1783 in All Saints Church, Wakefield, Yorkshire, the son of John Henry Maw and his wife Margaret (née Stovin).
Commissioned ensign in 6th (or 1st Warwickshire) Regiment of Foot on 4 April 1800, lieutenant on 17 June 1802, and captain on 3 December 1806.
He became captain, Royal Welch Fusiliers on 9 July 1807 and was killed, aged 29, at the storming of Badajoz on 6 April 1812.

I would be interested to know if you agree with my conclusion as to his identity and whether you have anything to add about him.

Sincerely,

Richard Sinnett
Maw, Captain John Henry Shaw (I783)

2527 Comments: I have some information that can be added to the Maw family tree if you wish. These include some
additions and some changes. I have collected this information from living relatives and documents
in the form of certificate copies. The ID numbers shown here correspond to the ones on the tree.

I have a copy of the birth certificate for Thomas Maw (ID I6755) born 24 Dec 1842 in Stockton-on-Tees.
It shows his father as George Maw (ID I6753) and his mother as Helen Maw (formerly Waring) who I would
assume is the blank on the tree. I assume she is also the mother of Jane (ID I6756)

Thomas married Elizabeth Plowman in June 1868 (She was born 1842 in Chichester, Sussex.
and matches ID I6757) and had Lillian Jane and Elizabeth.
Sometime later in 1877 (Did Elizabeth die or divorce?) Thomas married Margaret Brown (ID I6758), they had my
Great Grandfather Alfred George Maw (ID I6760).

Before Alfred George married Florence Hatcher (ID I8465), he had married Emily Woodcock on
2 Aug 1908 West Ham, Essex, England. (I have a copy of the marriage certificate) She was
born in 1883 in Poplar, London, England. ****

Alfred and Emily had my Grandfather Alfred George Maw born 19 Jun 1909 in Canning Town, West Ham
(confirmed by copy of birth certificate) who married Elsie May King on 27 Mar 1932 in Tottenham, London.
Elsie was born 12 Feb 1910 in Edmonton, London. Alfred died on 13 Sep 1984 in Edmonton, London.
Elsie died on 6 Apr 1994 in Crowborough, East Sussex.

They in turn had my Father Donald Patrick Maw born 26 May 1935 in Tottenham, London plus
Female still living (born 1938) and Male still living (born 1944). Donald married my mother
(still living born 1935). Donald died on 7 Dec 1994 in Southampton, Hampshire.

I was born on 5 Apr 1960 in Finchley, London.

*** When Alfred eventually married Florence Hatcher, they had two children:
Leonard Alfred Maw born 16 Oct 1922 West Ham, Essex. Died Jul 2002 at Redbridge, Essex.
Stanley Cyril Maw born 10 apr 1924 West Ham, Essex. Died Mar 1988 at Waltham Forest, Essex.

If I can help further, please contact me.

2540 Comments: Not sure as to how it was arrived at that Anthony Tissington Tatlow snr. was the son a Henry Tatlow when in actual fact he is the son of John Tatlow and Ann Emery and his grandparents were Dr. John Tatlow and Mary Tissington hence the name Tissington entering into naming rights. The other indicator is his will and benefits to Tatlow relatives in Ireland. Hope this is of use to you. Cheers from Tasmania.

2541 Comments: Re William Maw b 1897.

While researching my family I came across the census record of William of 2 April 1911. He was a farmers lad at the time working for one Edwin Edwards who was my gt-grandfather. Edwins daughter Dorothy married Gordon Newman Steel in 1920 after the entire family emigrated to New Zealand.

Just thought that you may be interested in the connection.

Kind regards, Gary Steel

2542 Comments: Two linked CDVs (cartes de visite) recently listed on eBay reproduce pages from The Times relating to the Nettleship Green family. This was a common way of commemorating significant dates, and they are almost always reproductions of the Births, Marriages & Deaths.

These two pages date respectively from 1st May 1893 and 3rd July 1907.

The first records the wedding on 29th April at St George's Hanover Square, by the Rev. Wm Cooper, M.A., cousin of the bride, of William Nettleship Green of 20 Chapter Road, Willesden Park, to Louisa Maude, only daughter of Henry Cooper Rose, M.D., and of the Middle Temple, Barrister-at-Law, of Rosslyn Hill, Hampstead. It adds that they will be "at home" from 12th to 17th June.

The second records the birth, on 1st July 1907, at 24 University Mansions, Lower Richmond Road, S.W., of a daughter to the wife of W. Nettleship Green. The "lead name" used in the second announcement is Green.

I can send you screen shots of these announcements should you miss seeing them yourself (an earlier message appears not to have gone through).

Yours,

Michael
