261 (Research):Hi Johan.

Great to hear from you!

Thomas Wood is my 4 x great grandfather, so I guess that would make your wife, Judy and I 4th cousins - once removed.

I had the same issue with the Wood family, as the names are quite common and difficult to trace. I only found out by chance that Thomas was married to Elizabeth Smith as they had a daughter, who passed away in Leeds, West Yorkshire. The burial record shows her parents as Thomas and Elizabeth Wood. They also had a daughter called Catherine. As they were non-conformists, the baptism register was much more detailed than the Church of England registers and it details Elizabeth as being the daughter of Francis Smith.

Thomas Wood was born in East Whitton near Middleham, North Yorkshire. His father, John Wood was also a Butcher, who lived in Middleham. There were a lot of Woods and Smiths in the area. However, the records available from that time are very few and it's difficult to be 100% sure who is actually related when trying to link family members.

Thomas' wife, Elizabeth, was indeed Betty's Sister in law. Betty's husband Stabler and Thomas' wife Elizabeth both passed away within a year of one another. Thomas must have been close to his nephew (Betty's son Stabler) as when his own son John passed away from Consumption aged only 27, he listed him as John Stabler Wood in the burial register of Leeds General Cemetery.

If you are a member of Ancestry.com I'd be happy to share the tree thus far with you. Sadly, I haven't got any further back than Thomas' father John Wood as there are no records available to date that would indicate who John's wife was or any other siblings of Thomas. I have included the other woods in the tree as there are some records that suggest these might be related to Thomas. However, I haven't managed to substatiate this, so added the records in the hope that there may be a link somewhere and I don't lose track of the records in the interim.

Best wishes,

Dave Wood
Smith, Stabler (I243)

262 (Research):Hi, Johan!

I can update your website info on Marion Margaret Maw's husband, my great-grandfather, Richard Griffiths.

He was born 25.05.1829 and died on 04.12.1902. I obtained this information from GWR records. He began his working life with the GWR, but then moved to another Bristol and Exeter Railway . His son, Herbert Richard ("Bertie") - my grandfather, became district superintendent of the south-western region of the GWR, which later amalgamated the Bristol and Exeter Railway . Richard Griffiths ended his working life as a subordinate in his son's office.

Regards,

Richard Griffiths.
