1726 | Birth: Jul. 1, 1912 Death: Oct. 11, 1925 son of A W Maw & Emma Champlain "When the automobile of J.W. Maw of Salem was run down by an Oregon Electric train on the Fifth street crossing yesterday, Maynard Maw, 12 years old, received injuries from which he died." CJ Oct 10, 1925 5:6 "Salem Boy Is Killed In Crash With Train--Maynard Maw, 12, Is Fatally Injured Sunday--Light Car Driven by Brother Is Wrecked by OE Near Highland Station--Maynard Maw, 12, who lived with his parents at 2135 North Fourth, was injured fatally Sunday noon when the Ford `bug' in which he was riding, collided with a Portland bound Oregon Electric train at the North Fifth street crossing near the Highland school. His brother, Russell, 17, was driving the car, and was injured about the right arm and hip. As he was driving the car the steering wheel saved him from being thrown through the windshield and onto the curb. Maynard was jolted through the windshield and struck the curb with his head, in front of the Fred F. Peters' home, into which he was taken rapidly losing consciousness. As soon as possible he was rushed to the Salem hospital, but died at 4 o'clock. The auto was tossed nearly 50 feet into a clump of rose bushes along the curb. It is said that there were several waiting at the Highland depot to take the train, and they had signalled for the train to stop. But it was not slowed up as quickly as usual, and it is thought that Russell misgauged the speed of the train. Mrs. J.W. Maw, mother of the boys, who was in Idaho Falls, Idaho, attending the funeral of her step mother, at the time of the accident, was notified and is returning home for the funeral of her boy, which will not be arranged until she arrives. 1739 | Birth: May 13, 1915 Death: Jan. 25, 2008 Afton P. Maw 1915 ~ 2008 Enjoying Sweet Reunions On January 25, this world lost one of its most valiant. Afton Powell Maw passed away following a short illness due to conditions related to age. She was approaching 93. Afton was born May 13, 1915 in Salt Lake City to Ireta Miller and Thomas Winter Powell Jr. She has only one younger sister (Beth P. Alder). The girls were 12 and 7 when they lost their father. Nine years later they also lost their mother to auto accident related injuries. Thereafter, Afton and Beth tenderly relied upon each other and forged a very special lifetime relationship. Afton met her loving husband, Harold L. Maw, who swept her off her feet. Their eternal companionship began November 26, 1938 in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they raised six children. Glen (Cindy), Marybeth (the late Leigh Cannon), Gilbert (Jenny), Blaine (Jeanne), Evan (Laurie), and Arlen (Debra Brandon). She is "grandma" to 21, and 27 great grandchildren affectionately call her "GG". She and Harold had many wonderful travel adventures together, but in July 2001, he suddenly traveled on alone leaving her a widow. Afton had a firm testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ and put that into action through service in primary, scouting, missionary and temple assignments. She was compassionate, soft spoken, even tempered, non-complaining and a loving wife and mother who was always concerned about serving others and never herself. She had a great appreciation for life's blessings, never wasted anything useful and was satisfied with simple things.
