    Notes:

    Hello Johan and Judy
Firstly, thank you very much for your work in constructing the Maw family database and making it available online. It is a great piece of work, which I am sure is appreciated by lots of people.
I am writing re my grandfather Thomas Maw (ID 32133) because I think he is likely to be Thomas Maw (ID 6987) in your database. I do not have any documentary proof (I would welcome any suggestions to obtain such!) but these are my reasons:
    (a) the sister of Thomas (6987), Annie Maw, was a visitor to the Payne family in the 1901 Census and my grandfather married Alice Payne after the death of her first husband John Payne. It would seem too much of a coincidence for there to be no connection.
    (b) I know from conversations with an older family member who knew my grandfather well that Thomas Maw was a Peat Cutter in Thorne as a young man and later lived in Cumbria before the first world war. This is consistent with Census records in 1901 and 1911. He moved to Sheffield to work in the steelworks and after the war he acquired a couple of army surplus horses to start a carting business.
    (c) I remember as a child visiting, with my grandfather, an aunty who lived in Millom, Cumbria. I think that this may be Thomas's sister Betsy.
For your information my grandfather died 7 Nov 1967 in Sheffield
I have attached an old photo of my grandfather with some unknown person who may be his sister in case this is useful.
    Thank you.
    Alan Maw

    Notes:

    Hello Johan
I have been trying to resolve an issue with the record for Richard Maw (1787 - 1864) ID 1056 in your database. It is clear that his gravestone bears the name of his wife as Frances and this name also appears in the 1851 Census, showing her birth place as Hatfield, Yorkshire West Riding. Your database shows ten children of this marriage. However, It is also clear that Richard married Mary Yates 24 Nov 1814 at Belton All Saints church. My theory is that most of Richard's children came from the marriage with Mary Yates and only the last child is from Frances. I do not have any proof yet but my reasons are:
    i. 1 Richard's first child, Hannah, was born Dec 1815, which fits with the date of marriage to Mary
ii. 2 Their second child is Maria, probably named after her mother
iii. 3 There is a record of the burial of Mary Maw 12 Aug 1835, age 48, at Belton All Saints (FreeBMD file no 14323). I haven't been able to find this person in your database.
iv. 4 If this is Richard's wife he would then be free to marry Frances, probably about 1835-36, but I have not been able to find a record of that marriage.
    v. 5 Richard's last child, born 19 Nov 1836, is called Frances, probably named after his new wife
Of course it is also possible, though I think unlikely, that Mary Yates and Frances are the same person eg Mary could have a middle name or have adopted the name Frances after her marriage. The original record shows that Mary was unable to sign her own name in the parish marriage register so it's possible she had an alternative name.

Incidentally re the source S103 where FreeReg says Richard married Mary Hill, I have checked the microfiche in Lincolnshire Archives and can confirm that this wrong. Mary Hill appears in the next record after Mary Yates and shows Mary Hill married Thomas Glew.

I hope that this is helpful.
    Alan Maw
