    Obituary:
Gerald Robert Grove was born July 19, 1924 to Samuel and Helen Grove. He grew up in the small town of Tribune, Kansas, and lived there until he proudly joined the U.S. Navy in 1944. He met Beverly Jean Maw in Corpus Christi, Texas. He was a trainee pilot and she was a WAVE; soon they were married. He became a commissioned officer and went to serve in the Pacific Theater. After World War II, Gerald owned and operated, with his grandfather, a machine shop in his hometown.

In 1952, Gerald was "invited" to serve again in the Korean War. Afterward, he and Beverly and their young family moved to Beverly's home state of Utah, where Gerald earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Utah State University and then a Ph.D. in English from the University of Utah. In the meantime, he worked as an expert welder at Ogden Iron Co.

After receiving his advanced degrees, Gerald taught English literature at Weber State University for many years and was chairman of the English department for part of that time. On weekends, the loud hiss of an acetylene torch and the sound of hammering on metal signaled his preferred avocation. Becoming a Naval Aviator and flying fighter aircraft were Gerald's proudest achievements; between the wars he flew out of Denver in the naval reserves, and he loved to tell about flying down Tribune's main street at treetop height to "liven" quiet Sunday mornings. But no blacksmith could have bested his ability to work red-hot metal and turn it into useful implements, and many former students will remember his riveting oration of Shakespeare's works and the poems of his beloved Shelley, Byron, and Keats.

Beverly left us in 2010. Reuniting with her was Dad's greatest desire — a desire that was fulfilled when he died on April 7, 2019 in Roy, Utah. Beverly and Gerald are survived by sons Gerald R. Grove, Jr. (Donna), Michael Grove (Donna), Jon Grove (Cheryl), Matt Grove (Alyssa), daughter Dancy Li (Ming), grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Gathering will be held at Leavitt's Mortuary, 836 36th Street, Ogden, Utah, on Thursday, April 18 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
