    Birth: Mar. 27, 1814, England
Death: Nov. 8, 1899 Scott County, Iowa, USA

Johnson Maw, one of the pioneers of Scott County, was born in Yorkshire, England, March 27, 1814, the son of Robert Maw and Mary Gelder. He was educated in select schools in England and immigrated to the U.S. in 1831. He operated a clothing and tailoring establishment in New York City until 1837, then went to Buffalo County, Illinois, where he was engaged in farming for about two years. He came to Scott County in 1839 and located on section 23 in Allen's Grove Township. This was on the Black Hawk purchase.

Johnson first married Margaret H. Teller on 7 May 1837 and they had one son, Robert J. Maw, 27 March 1838. Margaret passed away 17 October 1839.

He married Julia A. Thompson on July 30, 1843, the daughter of John E. Thompson who came from Virginia to Allen's Grove Township in 1838. He was a township trustee for many years and president of the District Agricultural Society of Mount Joy, held the office of school director and was active in the advancement of education. Through his effort and others Scott County was converted from a backwoods settlement into a flourishing and prosperous community. He died November 8, 1899, and is buried alongside his wife and son Morgan in the Allen's Grove Cemetery on the north central side.

Their children: Mary Elizabeth (Mrs. John E. Riley); Thomas B. Maw; John Elton Maw; George Powell Maw; Hannah Sarah (Mrs. Robert K. Brownlie); Johnson Frederick Maw; Elizabeth Jane (Mrs. Rufus C. Fuller); Ellen A. Maw; Steven Douglas Maw; Morgan James Maw; and James M. Maw.

Birth: Feb. 28, 1795 Virginia, USA
Death: Nov. 20, 1851 Scott County, Iowa, USA

John and his wife, Elizabeth (Myers) Thompson (1803-1889) were married 9 Dec 1824 in Jefferson Co., West Virginia. Wife Elizabeth is buried in the Hebron Cemetery, Nicollett Co., Minnesota

    Their children included:
    Thomas Bennett Thompson (1825-1903)
Julia Ann (Mrs. Johnson) Maw (1827-1892)
    Sarah Helen Thompson (1830-1830)
Almira Elizabeth (Mrs. Madison) Pickens (1831-1892)
Mary Ellen (Mrs. James) Hughes (1834-1898)
    John Wesley Thompson (1837-1915)
Lydia Malvina (Mrs. Beriah) King (1840-1920)
Sarah Adaline (Mrs. James) Quinn (1843-1922).

John Elton Thompson was one of seven early settlers of Allen's Grove Township who opened farms on the prairie at the edge of the grove. John and his family arrived in Allen's Grove Township in 1838 and are listed on the 1840 census. When the Thompson family came to Iowa, they found a very primitive area; no post office until August 1850, and the first store in 1859, both coming long after John's death. John and his wife, Elizabeth (Myers) Thompson, were blessed with two sons and six daughters, but raised only seven children as one daughter named Sarah Helen passed away while still an infant in 1830.

I found a file in the Davenport Library given to them from the Scott County court house labeled "John E. Thompson" which contained all legally documented information on him after his death, including a promissory note dated April 17, 1847, with his signature. A final report of his estate bears the signature of his son, Thomas B. Thompson, who was administrator of his father's estate; a receipt containing the signature of his wife, Elizabeth; as well as lists of his personal property.

From the Allens Grove Township federal census of 1850, John was a farmer, age 55, born in Virginia, had property worth $300 and lived with his wife, Elizabeth age 45, and children "Bennett" age 25, Mary age 16, John W. age 14, "Melvina" age 10 and Sarah age 7.

John Elton's small rectangular tombstone lies on the extreme south side of the cemetery, about halfway up the hill when you enter from the far south gate and has the inscription "J.E. Thompson, died November 20, 1857, aged 56 years, 8 months, and 20 days". There is no record of his death in the Scott County courthouse.

Birth: Oct. 15, 1803 Strasburg, Shenandoah County, Virginia, USA
Death: Sep. 1, 1889 Nicollet, Nicollet County, Minnesota, USA

In Elizabeth's death record in Nicollet Co., MN, it lists her father as Frederick Myers and her mother's maiden name as Hoffman. It was also suggested her parents died when she was very young and she grew up with an uncle on a plantation in Virginia, but all searches for family have been unsuccessful to date. There is information on the Internet that her mother was "Augusta" Hoffman - the surname is accurate per her death record but the name Augusta is not. Her father died in the Virginia/West Virginia area, not in Minnesota.

Elizabeth's husband was John Elton Thompson (1795-1851) buried in Allen's Grove Cemetery near Dixon, Scott Co., Iowa.

Their children included Thomas Bennett Thompson (1825-1903); Julia Ann (Mrs. Johnson) Maw (1827-1892); Sarah Helen Thompson (1830-1830); Almira Elizabeth (Mrs. Madison) Pickens (1831-1892); Mary Ellen (Mrs. James) Hughes (1834-1898); John Wesley Thompson (1837-1915); Lydia Malvina (Mrs. Beriah) King (1840-1920); Sarah Adaline (Mrs. James) Quinn (1843-1922).
