Description: I am convinced that the Dr Thomas Mawe referred to was Assistant Surgeon Thomas Mawe, 12 Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry, who died at Munnespore on 28 June 1857. Dr Mawe's death is described by Captain P G Scot also of the 12 Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry, in his personal narrative "Escape from Nowgong to Banda and Nagode".

The Bombay Times, 11 August 1858 makes the following mention:

MRS JANE MAWE, widow of assistant Surgeon Thomas Mawe, who died at Munnespore on 28 June 1857, 60 L and each of her seven children 5L 15s 6d per annum each. 100L 8S 6D

Finally, there is mentionj of a sister (she is referred to as Margaret in this very website), to whom he sent five letters (also noted in this website and referenced to the National ref Mss Eur Photo Eur 69 1855-1857). The important point is Thomas Mawe's years of birth and death are noted as: 1816-1857.

Comments (The Maw Family):
Thomas Mawe in this family was the fourth son of Thomas Mawe MD of Tralee, Co Kerry who died during the Cholera epidemic in Tralee in 1832. The eldest son was James Harvey Mawe who entered Trinity College Dublin in 1827 and became Attorney in Court of Exchequer, Dublin in 1834. Their mother was Anne Lett (Kings Inns Admission Papers, IMC, Dublin 1982, p 332).

There is an account of the harrowing escape of Jane and Lotte, detailing the death of her husband as they escaped from Nowgong in Central India in 1857, in Angels of Albion, women of the Indian Mutiny by Jane Robinson, Viking, 1996, p 68 to 72.
