I have just come across your Maw website and was very interested to see my grandfather, John Maw Strutt, listed on it. He was born on 12th November 1890 and died on 29th September 1948 in Sunderland. John Maw Strutt married Henrietta Pallett in 1914 and my mother was their eldest daughter, Joyce Pallett Strutt.

Unfortunately I can't get into your home page as my anti-virus software is being a bit over-zealous, so I can't work out what relationship you would have to him. I'd be more than happy to share what information I have if this would be of interest.

Hi Johan and Judith,

Thank you so much for sending me this information. It will take me a while to work through it but rest assured that I will do so and highlight any differences. I can see two discrepancies at the moment:

William Robert Strutt's birthplace should be Manningtree, Essex. William was a Master Mariner, as was his father, Robert Strutt and his son, also Robert Strutt. There were at least two more generations of mariners before that, probably more. The family moved from Manningtree to Sunderland about 1864.

Leah Kunda Strutt should be Leah Kerridge Strutt - Kerridge was William Robert Strutt's mother's maiden name.

You have much more data than I do, so all I'm really able to add at the moment is in the attached GEDCOM file which will give you some more details about John Maw Strutt and his family. Sadly, I never met my grandfather because he died in 1948 before I was born. He was a fitter on the railway belonging to the National Coal Board and was killed in an accident at work.
I'm attaching a photo of John Maw Strutt and Henrietta Pallett which was taken on their honeymoon in 1914.

I haven't done a lot of work on the Maws because I've been concentrating mainly on my Strutt and Medcalf lines. As you know, they had a wholesale fruit business in Sunderland which goes back to at least 1879. I have looked directories of Durham and have found the following entries:

1879 Post Office Directory
Maw John, Greengrocer, 92 Church Street I assume this is John Maw b. 1848

1906 Kelly's Directory
Maw Ann (Mrs), fruit and potato merchant, 4 Lambton St. (She was also listed as a Private Resident living at 9 Argyle Square, where she was in the
1901 census). This is John Maw b.1848's second wife.
1906 Directory also lists Maw, Peter, grocer, 1 Alderson Street. I think this must be Peter Maw b. 1856.

1910 - Kelly's Directory
Maw Ann (Mrs), fruit and potato merchant, 4 Lambton St

1921 - Kelly's Directory
Maw & Whitehouse, wholesale fruit and potato merchants, 4 Lambton Street

1938 - Kelly's Directory
Maw, J & Sons
Who. Fruit mers, 4 Lambton St and 41 & 42 Charles St. This could be John Maw b. 1874, Ann Maw's stepson.
