He was born February 1, 1928 in Ogden, to Irl Owen and Frederika Schroeder Champneys. He married Donna Patricia Brown on August 20, 1948 in Ogden. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on March 22, 1957. Irl served as a Fireman First Class with the US Navy during World War II. In his early years, he worked for Service Fruit of Ogden. He then worked for Hill Air Force Base as an Aircraft Welder and later a Quality Control Inspector. He retired from Hill AFB in 1984 after 34 years of service. He also taught welding at the Ogden/Weber ATC Center, retiring after 30 years. He received the Outstanding Effort Award. He was respected for the way he related and taught students from all walks of life. Irl was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where he was a High Priest and a faithful Home Teacher until his death. He served two terms as president of the North Ogden Kiwanis Club. His greatest service was at Christmas time dressed as Santa for everyone's children. His greatest joy was his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and his special pet and companion Chelsea. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Donna, four daughters, Jan McFarland, North Ogden; Debra (Donald) Manley, North Ogden; Dana (Tony) Mook, Las Vegas, NV; Diane (Marc) Hall, North Ogden; 15 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and one brother, Carlyle Champneys of Idaho. He was preceded in death by his mother, father, three brothers, Udell, Owen, and identical twin Irle, one sister, Gloria Dunlap, and two sons-in-law, Val D. McFarland and E. Conrad Maw. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 17 as 11 a.m. at the North Ogden 9th Ward Chapel, 3100 North 575 East, with Bishop Doyle Obray officiating. Friends may call at Lindquist's North Ogden Mortuary, 2140 North Washington Blvd, on Wednesday, June 16 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday at the Ward Chapel from 9:30 to 10:30a.m. The family would like to express their thanks and appreciation to Dr. Richard Frame, his staff and the hospice nurses, Michelle, Tonya and Queenie. Interment will be at Ben Lomond Cemetery, North Ogden, Utah.
