Correspondence with George Archibald, volunteer, The Scottish Mining Museum, Newtongrange EH22 4QN: "…. We do have copies of his books on Ventilation and Compressed Air . Interestingly the book The Pinciples and Practice of Mine Ventilation was a joint venture with J.S.Penman Ph.D, BSc.(Edin), formerly Head of Dept. of Mining and Vice Principal, Barnsley College of Technology. We have the 2nd edition (1947) of the book and a 3rd impression of the second edition dated 1957. My guess is that the 1st edition would likely be printed around 1938. His book on Compressed Air Practice is dated 1916, when he was lecturer on mining and engineering at Fife Mining School. We also have the reports of the Mines Rescue Apparatus Research Committee, and I enclose extracts from the First Report (1918) and the Second (1920), which are the only references given to his contribution. His digest lecture on the Committee's work is also in our library but no biography is given with it."
Extract from the First Report: p.6: "In July, 1917, you appointed Miss Elizabeth Gilchrist, M.A., B.Sc, and Mr. David Penman, B.Sc. (London and Edinburgh), respectively as chemical and general assistants to Dr. Briggs. We take the opportunity of thanking the Governors of the Dundee University College and the Committee of the Cowdenbeath Mining School for so readily granting them leave of absence to take up their duties in Edinburgh."
Extract from the Second Report: p.6: "Miss Elizabeth Gilchrist, M.A., B.Sc., and Mr. David Penman, B.Sc., who assisted Dr. Briggs since July 1917, have recently accepted other posts; the former as Carnegie Research Fellow in the University of Edinburgh and the latter as Lecturer in Mining in the St. Helen's Technical Institute. We are sorry to lose the help of these expert assistants, who gave two years of loyal work to the research. In September, 1918, Mr. Penman read an excellent digest of the First Report before the Institution of Mining Engineers, and the ensuing discussion was of much value."
